The maximum image size allowed for profile pictures is 499 pixels by 499 pixels. There's a byte requirement you can't go over too, but I think that's only usually an issue if you have an animated profile picture, since that takes up a lot more data

the max resolution is 500x500 however scratch will shrink the image down to 90x90 so your best bet for highest resolution is exactly 90x90 (please note that the 90x90 is the largest the pfp is ever displayed as, and will be smaller on other parts of the site likes comments or profile pages)

My profile picture is 180x180. It's a multiple of 60x60 and 90x90, which are both sizes that show up on the website. It's not necessary to go above that, as the website will always downscale your PFP to a size below that to not be overkill for different areas of the site, as far as I'm aware. The maximum, however, is 500 pixels (appears as 250 in Scratch's costume editor).
It's your choice whether you want to use 180x180 or 90x90 (or any size you like). I've only seen PFPs render at up to 90x90 looking at various website areas, but sometimes it shows 60x60 PFPs, and if the PFP you uploaded isn't a multiple of both of those sizes, then there might be some very, very slight distortion when in-between pixels are inserted. I haven't seen this personally, though, but I uploaded it as 180x180 anyway because I knew that it could technically happen.
