perhaps use pen? this seems difficult (sorry for unhelpfulness)

pen is very duffucult, any other way? maybe look at a fruit ninja video to see what i mean.

Scratch loops normally run about 30 times a second so a quick movement is unlikely to be able to create clones fast enough. You can try simplifying so, for example, you only create clones when the mouse has moved at least 5 pixels since the last clone was created but I doubt you're going to get a quick enough response from Scratch to do what you're doing. Reducing the amount of code each clone has to run might also help but not enough to really make a difference.

You can improve things a little by making the clones in advance - eg make 20 clones with ID equal to 1 to 20. Then instead of creating clones your sprite just changes a global variable in a loop. Each clone's script waits until the variable shows its ID value and shows itself and runs its script before hiding and waiting for the next time. But from a quick test that doesn't help much. Perhaps bits of the clone scripts could also be custom blocks with no screen refresh but again a quick test didn't seem to help.
