Yep, Linux is great for that, the only disadvantages are incompatibility of non-programming applications and lack of good hardware support. You do have to get custom parts or get an old PC/laptop to get Linux on. Mac is great for removing those two disadvantages, but sadly isn't open source, and comes with Apple's Pricing and telemetry (it's lesser than Microsoft but worse than Linux)

Linux can run on pretty much ALL hardware. Unless a device is either hard to reverse engineer or is outright rare, Linux will support it.
Everything from that old CPU from 2009 (or maybe older even) all the way up to that i9-12900K will work. All the graphics cards nvidia provides drivers for. Literally 99.9% of networking cards. Most SD card readers. Most of everything!

Not all errors are driver issues, it could also be a mistake YOU make. If you can't do basic computer troubleshooting without calling for help, Don't use Linux! Your hands aren't staying clean, and you can't run from the command line.

yeah, linux ran really nicely on a Dell Latitude D610. Really old chonky laptop. That is, until it became hard to find a supported distro fir x86. I mean ArchLinux32 exists but dies it even have a desktop environment? if it does then that would be really great

Are you still using Internet Explorer or legacy Edge? If so, why? They're both garbage.
Edit: According to your user agent, you use Edge Chromium, which is available for Linux (scroll) (.deb, .rpm)

It usually is, but humans aren't perfect so even updates to open-source software isn't going to be either.

At least most Linux distros ship with the Timeshift utility.
I'd always say to make a backup at least before updating. I know Manjaro with the BTRFS file system actually does that automatically before any Pacman updates.
