jumping into the dumpster fire (you know the drill)

here we go…

scratch is being ableist. they have seen the complaints from people who are neurodivergent but don't even bother. as someone who is nd, i can say that the new interface makes me very uncomfortable. at this point scratch is just pushing away new users, and old ones. I've been on scratch for like almost 2 years, and I can't stand the ST's ignorance. i do not mean this in any kind of way, these are just my suggestions on the update, whether the feedback is negative or positive.

1. the new ui/interface
all i can say without being mean is… bleh. the buttons are too big. it looks horrible on mobile, where about 40% (rough estimate, no actual statistics were used) of scratch users are. there is way too much blue light, which is proven in studies to be bad for you. many people who are nd have gotten sensory overloads from the new update. there was no prior warning or anything to warn us (the nd community), so we don't know what to do about this. i'd especially like to point out this quote from the ST, who definitely saw all the complaints from ND people;

ScratchCat wrote:

We know that change is difficult, and it can take some time to get used to. Scratch is continuing to grow and we want to make sure it stays around for a long time. These changes were made as a way for us to help ensure Scratch continues to run smoothly, quickly, and safely for everyone who uses it long into the future.

they do realise that this is damaging to nd people, right? this is blatant ableism. I'm annoyed.

2. the comment limit
just… why? there are many active rps on scratch in studios that are longer than 25 comments? how am i supposed to have a conversation with my friends in studios with this limit, if you aren't removing it, at least raise it higher, to like 75 or 100? the st claim that it's for loading time, but it's harder to load many different threads than one long thread. i can confirm as i have tested on my iPad Mini from 2014, and it loads 75-100 comments with little to no lag. studios aren't just project galleries? isn't that the point st said when they changed galleries to studios in 2.0? the hypocrisy.

3. manager limitations
again, st not listening to the community. what about studios like the LGBTQ+ studio and others? the owners are inactive? you can't even transfer ownership. this feature is useless. i don't have much to say, but what about studios with manager-interactive descriptions, like in a roblox adopt me studio I am a part of where managers can add your/their username to the description? the owner of that studio has moved to another account, so they have to log onto their old account every time that they have to make an edit, like in the manager logs. what's the advantage to being a manager, a fancy title to flex measly curators on? /hj

4. activity log limitations? i think that's the word idk
this is the only okay update in this. i like how i can now see who's removed, what projects are added, curator additions/removals, etc. most of the changes are flooded by comment logs which can be annoying if you're the manager of a popular studio and there's a raid. this update is pretty decent, compared to the others. but what if i want to stalk my friends conversations? /j

this took me half an hour to write so please comment on my points! bye!

So Scratch is ableist now? Quite a big accusation that is. I think they are looking more into the issue with people with certain disorders before making an announcement. It literally only released yesterday, give it sometime, they’ll fix it.

I found out how to put letters in cloud variables! https://turbowarp.org/526557379 (I really didn't feel like sharing the project, lol)

if they have had “scratch is welcoming to everyone” in their community guidelines for god knows how long then they should've known this was coming, they have also said they won't change it back even though there are hundreds, maybe thousands of complaints about the problems this poses to nd people. ableism, i sense.

This is like saying "No offence, but ." The Scratch Team has feelings too, you know?

The comment limit was implemented for genuine reasons. There is a lot of lag, and RPs can find workarounds.

I wouldn't use ableist… more like they just don't care about anybody. including disabled people

If that was true, they would not have said this today:

There is the possibility that they were talking about the limitations instead of the UI layout, sure. But if that was the case, that would mean they're completely ignoring the ND complaints.

I read all of it. I think you misunderstood something. Do you have a source for “It takes longer to load a lot of comments?” Plus, who says people are going to create new comments? Humans can adapt. Other than RPers and some others, it won't really be needed. The limit will simply encourage using one's replies wisely and not spam.

touche, but RPs are dead now. I used to rp and most RPs were about 75-100 replies long. I used to scratch on an old 2013 MacBook Pro that's basically dead, and when I was at full charge and had only a few tabs open, i have little to no lag. Scratch really isn't listening to the community anymore. No one asked for this.

Additionally, I want to bring in a bit of math here. There would be 2 comments of 25 replies (26 if you count the original comment). You would need to load both of them. What if one reply was under the “Load More” button? More loading. So instead of only having to load 51 comments, we have to load 52 and a chance of more loading, and load thousands of angry scratchers saying that no one asked for this.

The sad thing is the links where it said “more comments” used to tell you how many more comments there were, but now it doesn't, so you have to refresh more to see if there are new comments, rather than just looking to see if the number has changed!

Agreed. Can't the ST at least show the number of replies?

Uhhhh.. I exist.
