How to start with Scratch?

I have some people I'm teaching (young, less than 8yo) and I don't know where to start. Help?

Maybe like starting with the most basic blocks, and build your way to advanced blocks; show how they connect to each other. Build like basic scripts, and show how they work. Then show a relatively advanced script based on the mentioned script, and asking the uncertain output.

First thing to do is to introduce them to the event and movement blocks, as they are the most basic and easiest to understand.

That depends on how much they already know about Scratch. If they know absolutely nothing, then I would recommend going through and teaching them how blocks work, function, connect to each other, and how sprites interact. If they know how some of the blocks work, try setting up little challenges for them to try and solve. It doesn't have to be anything big, just something like “make a cat change costumes every second”; basic stuff. A lot of the skill of using Scratch is just knowing your options and what you can use, so I'd just walk things in step-by-step the best you can. Good luck!

Um…start with the most basic stuff you can think of.
Such as:

Or just give them the Getting Started tutorial.

Thanks.
I'm not trying to be the teacher here - I'm teaching some 8yo's on my break and I'm an adult, so I just don't know what to have them create. They love a multiplication game I made, but they want to learn to make a ‘game’. Any stater ideas for that?

Have them make a game related to what they are learning in school. I assume (because they're 8) they should be in school, so have them ponder about a topic they learned and how they can “game-ify” it! I've done this plenty of times for school projects over the years, and if it's something they enjoy, I'm sure they'd have fun doing it.

You can use basic movement blocks to teach them how to make a platformer game or a pong game.
