Content warning for NFE projects (NOT A SUGGESTION FOR 13+ SCRATCH)

UPDATE: This wouldn't apply to projects marked as NFE for having animated thumbnails

For games on Newgrounds that are above the rating of E(veryone), there's a content warning that explains why it has that rating, and it also asks you if you want to proceed. (can't find image of it)

I think it would be a neat idea to create a similar warning for projects marked as NFE, and it would also lower the chances of younger kids accessing more mature (8+ or something) content. This warning could be configured or disabled in Account Settings.

Here's a mockup I created with the vector editor, and a mockup for the settings page.

Pros
  • Lowers the chances of younger Scratchers accessing content they may want to see
  • Likely easy to implement (because it is a reskin of the error screen)
  • Not obtrusive to people who actually want to see the project

Cons

What kind of “flexibility”?

7.2 A 13+ version of the Scratch website or age-restricted content
Scratch is designed for ages 8 to 16, but any content shared on the website must be appropriate for all ages. Dividing the community by making a separate, age-restricted website would not be helpful. Potential restrictions from entering the website (such as a warning, or requiring a parent to answer math equations) would not necessarily stop an underage child from entering the 13+ website.

This suggestion extends to age-restricting anything on Scratch, such as viewing specific projects. As a general rule, content shared on the Scratch website should be appropriate for all ages.

Support! This would highly decrease the chances of me or anyone else viewing a project with content that might scare them.

This is not what I'm asking for. I'm asking for a warning for projects marked as NFE by the ST.

Once again, my suggestion IS NOT asking for that.

Yes, which is age-restricted content.

Would these projects still be viewable on the front page with these warnings?
Scratch doesn't like to advertise if a project is NFE which might upset people.
Would this be viewable to the owner or not.

Better mockup:

if you think that it's ridiculous for a drawing of a panda to be nfe, you're overthinking the mockup

No, this wouldn't be “viewable” on the front page much like how it works right now, and the warning itself wouldn't show to the creator. However, the project would have a label above it (that's only available to the creator) explaining why the project is marked as NFE. I'm fairly sure someone has already made a suggestion for it, so what I'm saying is that this content warning would tie in with that.

I personally think my mockup would work a bit better, as it lists the reasons why said project is marked NFE, and it also prevents the viewer from proceeding by accident.

Honestly, I don't really know if this is rejected or not, because it does kind of fit into

not reporting it to be closed though

Anyways, I would Semi-support this suggestion. It's a good idea, except people who read without thinking, or “lazy readers” will likely ignore this, since, you know, they don't read things carefully, later they will report the project even though it was clearly said that it was NFE. I doubt that younger peers will also not ignore this warning, just because they're curious.

Fair point about the lazy readers or curious young users, but at least it somewhat prevents them from viewing content not appropriate for their age. Also consider this, if all content on Scratch is supposed to be for “all ages”, why are we allowed to push for a PG-rating? Why are we allowed to say carp? (I substituted it because the forum filter doesn't like the actual word)

NFE projects are still projects that follow the community guidelines, it's just that the Scratch Team would prefer for less people to see it, so there's no need for a warning. If there was, the project would be taken down.

Imagine being warned before using a project that has an animated thumbnail. No support. also per @fdreerf
