Abandon the function to delete other people's comments on users' own profiles, and Refine "Report" form

I suggest to abandon the function to delete other people's comments on users' own profiles, etc.
The reason why it is because some users tend to delete “disliked” comments (disagreement, advice on misusing of community, etc.).

Really inappropriate comments can be addressed in the report
(when we report a comment which we have delete permission, the comment is deleted at the same time).

In addition,
I suggest to make the “Report” form for the comments on the outside of the Discussion Forum be more detailed.

The current “Report” form is too simple, and leads to abuse of report.
Currently, the only way to give a reason for reporting is to use “Contact Us”.
However, picking up the URL of a comment can be a hassle, and some people may not know how to do it.

The following is a detailed draft of the “Report” form.
- Provide an edit box to write a detailed reason (required), like the “Report” form on the Discussion Forum.
- Clarify that “The content of the report will be checked and abuse will be subject to caution”. (all “Report” forms should have this attention)

No support.

Sometimes user wants to delete comments which do follow the guidelines but uncomfortable to the user.

For example once I had this person not check my code properly and jumped into a conclusion. It probably did not break guideline but I pretty much did not like it very much so I deleted it.

It can also be used to clean up comment area.

Thank you for your reply. but…

Help keep the site friendly.
It means to keep the site comfortable.
If a comment is uncomfortable objectively, it is out of the guidelines.
On the other hand, if a comment is uncomfortable subjectively, it is just a “disliked” or “disagreement”.

“Disliked” can not be the reason why delete the comments which someone made some efforts to write.
To delete other's comment arbitrarily is like to neglect other's “Moral rights”.

It makes sense, however, it doesn't take precedence over this circumstance which I told here.
And also, if you don't want to make your profile “dirty”, you can turn off comment posting.

No support. I can see your point, but the commenting space on someone's profile is their commenting space. It's what you see when you look at someone's profile and then scroll down. Since it's a part of their profile that other people may freely add content to, I think it's only fair to let them moderate it themselves if they want, even if that means removing comments that they disagree with.

If you have a serious disagreement with someone and they keep removing your comments, perhaps you could express it in the form of a project or a forum thread. Just make sure to keep it polite - and remember: behind every username is a human being.

Ceratainly someone's profile is regarded as their own space.
in fact, they can freely design the upper space of the profile. (e.g. “About me”, “What I'm working on”, etc.)
However, commenting space is the place for others to leave comments.
As I said last time, they can turn off comment posting.

Even moderators of the Scratch Team, they never use their privilege based on their own feeling.

Therefore, I don't think it is a moderating to delete others' comments that they disagree with.
Since they can turn off comment posting, they are already moderating enough.

The forum can not be such a place, because it is perfectly public space where private or local matters should not exist.

Support for all the reasons you gave. I was going to suggest the same thing, but found this suggestion :^P

Today I just deleted a bunch of old comments on my profile - not that they were bad, or spammy. I just wanted to have a less cluttered profile.
And, what else should you do if people are insistently asking for feedback, f4f, or anything else you don't want or even spamming or hating? Reporting can be slow sometimes and it's more efficient for profile owners to be able to delete unwanted comments instead of relying on the ST.

All you have to do is declare you don't accept such actions.
Then, they become worth reported.

See #1. It doesn't rely on the ST.

Strictly speaking, the number of reports may increase due to this,
instead, my 2nd suggestion will decrease the number of reports.
Totally, abuse of report will decrease, then the load of the ST wil decrease.
As a result, reporting and moderating system will be more effective.

No support, I do this most of the time to clean my comment section. Also, the ST doesn't listen to reports sometimes.

I have already shown a counterargument.
I ask you to give me another counterargument, not repeating.

Although you chose receive others' comment, you want do delete them.
I feel it is inconsistent.

I show another reason.
Deleting comments enables users to do private messaging easily.
(e.g. inappropriate external link, external account, …)
This is a safety issue.

The opinion that you want to delete comments freely is a matter of taste.
My opinion is an issue of others' care and safety.
Therefore, the former doesn't take precedence over latter.

Some people have triggers over certain topics and it can make them very uncomfortable and feel unsafe if they see it mentioned. We should be allowed to delete comments because of “dislikes.” It is our profile. We should be able to have some control over it.

The ability to delete comments doesn't mean you can just bypass the filter. Also, the ST can view deleted comments, so it's not like they can't get in trouble.

Same here. I've yet to see another counter from you. The reasons you have stated have been countered and you act like repeating yourself is a new reason. The ST are really busy, so they can't moderate as quickly. Allowing users to moderate their projects and profiles is beneficial. Also, while users will sometimes delete comments without an actual mature reason, it is frustrating, but you can't make them listen to you, so it's not actually your problem. Although, I do agree on the more detailed reports, but they shouldn't have to be too detailed because then the ST wouldn't be able to get as many actual reports.

Absolutely no support for the first one. This is their profile. While comments can follow the community guidelines, the user may still feel uncomfortable by certain comments. Isn't their feelings important? That person behind the screen is a human. They even may have even had it rough and thus have triggers. Also, some users really just want to clean up their profile and get rid of old/embarrassing comments.

I do, however, support the second one. I have recently had a need to make more specific reports. Right now though, the report system for comments is severely lacking.

Sorry, no support. This can come in handy at times.

  • I allow advertisements on my profile but I delete the comments after I check out a project. I don't want to encourage more people to advertise there. I also don't want to report any of the comments either!
  • Some people also want their profiles to look clean and hence create “chat studios” after deleting existing comments on their profile. Although I dislike this, some people really like that. Reporting every comment with the reason “I want to make my profile look clean” would just create more problems for the Scratch Team even if a warning is shown.
  • Sometimes, when people take a break from scratch, they leave a comment on their profile explaining stuff. When they come back, they normally delete the comment to avoid confusion!
  • A user should have some control over their profile! Removing this would just destroy that.

Hope my criticism here was constructive

The ST can not know there was such a comment, because there is no notification and they can bypass the filter easily by selecting words.

My point of view is the priority of the issues.
Counterarguments don't discuss the point.

No one knows the load content of the ST, nor that they want to reduce which kind of the load, what they want to concentrate on.
Also, some users can't judge if they should delete comments or not, as you mensioned.

(Someone may already know …)
I have informed an ST member of this topic.
He says “Interesting”.
I hope the Scratch Team take up this issue.

Abandon the function to delete other people's comments on users' own profiles, and Refine "Report" form

The following is the current summary.
Please let me know if important information is missing.

1st suggestion:
My opinion:
- The comments that follow the guidelines should not be deleted.
- Since deleting comments enables users to do private messaging easily, this is a safety issue.
- If users don't want to make your profile “dirty”, they can turn off comment posting.

Opposite opinion:
- A user should have some control over their profile.
- It is useful in some cases (e.g. cleaning up comment area).

2nd suggestion:
- No opposite opinion except for #16.
