What is the BACKPACK in scratch? EXPLAINED.
When I was a new scratcher, I had NO idea what the backpack was. Now that I do, It's become a LIFESAVER! It saves tons of time reusing your code, and you can even use it to borrow code from others too! (With permission of course) Here's a quick guide to the backpack!
What can you put into the backpack?
There are 3 types of things you can put in the backpack.
1. Scripts: You can put any piece of code in your backpack. Anything from a single block, string, or boolean, to a GINORMOUS function! This saves a lot of time because if you use a lot of the same combinations of blocks, you don't want to keep remaking them from memory every time? Just pull them out of your backpack!
2. Parts of sprites/stage: You can put sounds from the sounds tab, costumes, and backdrops from a stage in your backpack. If you ever want to reuse some art or your favorite background music, this is the perfect solution! All 3 of these things are contained inside sprites and stages.
3. Whole Sprites: You can put ENTIRE sprites into your backpack. This includes all of the scripts, costumes, and sounds inside of them.
How do you put these things in your backpack?
It's easy! Just open the backpack tab on the bottom and drag the item you want to save into it. To remove an item, right-click and choose delete.
But WHY would you want to use the backpack?
Check out this explainer video for a full explanation and example of how you'd use the backpack!
