Your thumbnail is whatever your scratch project shows when you leave the project (see project page button). For example, if you leave variables and sprites everywhere, that will be your thumbnail. If you want to create art, create a sprite, draw your art, hide everything else, then click the see project page button, then that will be your thumbnail

no it's a bug, it's been going on for a while. at least Chrome 87.0 141 and chrome 87.0 142 has a thumbnail bug but it could be other browsers too. the solution is to switch browsers if it's the same bug and try saving there
