The animations you see are actually animated gif files. GIF files have been around for quite some time and animated gifs made a big comeback in recent years. There are many websites that allow you to build animated gifs online, but you can also use the free GIMP images editor (http://www.wikihow.com/Create-an-Animated-GIF-Image-with-GIMP)
