What makes a game fun for you?

When thinking about any video game on consoles, handhelds, PCs or even here on Scratch, what makes that game fun?

The level designs? Characters? Graphics? Items? Bosses?

Does beating a level satisfy you, or beating a boss and getting a new item tickle your fancy?

Or is it simplicity? Maybe even complexity?

Here I go.

I don't actually like challenging or complex games. While that may seem to be present in some games, if it's really a good game, it's just an illusion. The core of a game if you really look at it, is you have to want to play further. If you've accomplished that, you've made a good game.

After looking at how humans work a little, you'll come up with some basic rules…people want to accomplish things, and people want to explore. Really, that's all you need. The game needs to get your attention, never really get boring, and what you do has to have value. Really, if it has that, any game is good.

To be more specific though, I like games that aren't difficult to learn to play properly, has room for a ton of skill improvement, and requires strategy. Perhaps a medieval war game, or a city sim, or whatever.

I like not having to contort my hands awkwardly to reach special combo moves.

I like video game music! D:
Just kidding on the “the only makes a game fun for me is great music” thing.
To be honest, I think a game is fun if it has action, a medium amount of romance scenes and is not too hard and not to easy to beat.

For me, it's the chance to insert yourself into the game, in away. Either that, or it has some humor in it. Or it's not too easy.

Easter Eggs. Lots of em.

And those little collectible items that you have to search forever before you find.
Basically, I like a game with replay value, likable characters, and action.

Games that are pretty easy to get a hang of but way out there with their aesthetic choices are pretty fun 4 me

Depends on the genre.

For a game like Metroid, I'd like it if there were several items and they all had a use. (Tails Adventure is a good example.)

For a standard platformer, make the levels challenging but fair.

For a puzzle, have the difficulty ramp be balanced. (i.e. the first levels don't require too much thought, but the last levels require tons of thinking).

For RPGs, make sure it isn't a chore to level up, and make it so that level ups have some value.

Oh, and make sure the music is pleasant while you are on your adventure. (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, SONIC CHRONICLES)

The end.

That's actually a pretty good question.

To answer this, I'm going to look at my favorite video game series, The Elder Scrolls, and think about what it is about it that makes me like it so much. Part of it I believe is the scenery and amazingly beautiful music that the games have. The games also allow the player to create and customize their own characters. Because of this, I often see my characters, particularly the ones I've had for months or even years, as extensions of myself. The games all take place in an open world, so you're pretty much allowed to do whatever you want and it never forces you to do anything. The fictional world that the series is set in is rich with detailed history and lore, which makes the setting itself three-dimensional.

For me, I don't like games that require brute strength and other special abilities that need to be developed as the game progresses (through, say, XP trade-ins) as it's just… I really don't know. I guess I feel anxious about it. Transformers War for/Fall of Cybertron are exceptions just because I like the storyline/characters. I like games that require thought more than anything else and don't require you to refill ammo; purely puzzlers. In a sci-fi format, preferably. Those ones I actually feel success for beating a level, but a sort of dread for the next one as I could very well get stuck on it. But that's what makes it engaging. Games also have to have likeable characters, and for me, that usually means evil robots, insane robots, loveable robots, etc. Robots. It doesn't have to (as Brain Age 2 is one of my favorite games, and except for the virtual head of Dr. Kawashima, there aren't any robots in there), but usually.

As for other games, I will enjoy fighting games if the set-up of a fight is basically laid out and logical, which is why I like Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door above all other Mario games (Super Paper Mario in particular; I really don't like that one for some reason). I REALLY liked the fighting style, the different characters (Vivian in particular XD) as well as the story itself. FPS games are just… I guess too free to fight how you want.

Opinion.

A good storyline, Great gameplay, great controls, great sound, hard but not TO hard, and my mood. Sometimes I feel like playing a FPS game, others platforming and others hack-and-slash.

Come on, bring us season 2 of Stranger Things already. HYPE.
