i think there should be a scratch subdomain called fonts.scratch.mit.edu where you can select a custom font for your project.
In the costume editor, just make a text, and there will be all the normal fonts, but also a “select a custom font…” option at the bottom.
I am not saying you can selet any font you want, that's illegal, i am saying that you have a bigger choice of fonts that scratch can add, such as:
And there could also be an option to submit your fonts or something

Question: If you submit a font, and it does not support some of the unicode, what would happen to the characters?

We're open to font suggestions, but keep in mind we don't want too many fonts for design reasons (long story short: too many fonts = Scratch being too big and more laggy).
It is possible to use a custom font via 1.x, though the font will not stick and revert to a default font upon upload.

When uploading, the file will be changes from .sb to a .sb3 file, so the whatever custom font you had used in the .sb file will not be kept. We're open to font suggestions, but keep in mind we don't want too many fonts for design reasons (long story short: too many fonts = Scratch being too big and more laggy). How could it revert if 1.x only had Bitmap?

Workaround: Type in another font in a different website, take a screenshot of it, and remove the background/white.

Can you elaborate more about fonts.scratch.mit.edu? I'm confused what its purpose is.

Another way is where you make a Google Drawings, put the text there, download as SVG and upload it, but you can't do that if you don't have a Google account.
We're open to font suggestions, but keep in mind we don't want too many fonts for design reasons (long story short: too many fonts = Scratch being too big and more laggy). To fix that I think you could just use Google fonts, like the existing Scratch fonts already are, and these fonts would be accessible online instead of stored in the editor. (So you wouldn't be able to access these fonts offline…) That could work? I like something about this idea.

Workaround: Type in another font in a different website, take a screenshot of it, and remove the background/white.Scratch isn’t an image editing software, and it would be next to impossible to remove the background perfectly so it doesn’t look terrible. You would either miss a few parts of the background (especially if it’s white, as you cannot distinguish the white background from the costume editor white background), or cut off too much of the font. So, this method does nothing to achieve what the OP is suggesting

Possible solutions:
Make all fonts only accessible when online. If the user isn't connected to the internet, just make the font the default font.
Use popular font engines like font squirrelI'm not a developer, so these might not work.
Anyways complete support!
don't you DARE ask why

But why?
Here's what will happen in the next 10 seconds:
1: I ask “Isn't kind of obvious what why?” I want to have more font choices? What don't you get?
2: I grab the knife out of my pocket
3: s t a b
