Welcome to GalacticaOS, where we work hard and have fun to create the best OS Scratch has ever seen! Everyone is welcome to join, even New Scratchers, if they can prove that they have at least a month of Scratch experience on at least one of their accounts - but there are other factors that determine whether a person will be accepted or not, of course! GalacticaOS is supposed to have a lot of cool features, and everybody, even amateur coders, can contribute in at least 1 way (Read the details & rules for more info)! Here, we like to have fun as we work! All members of the GalacticaOS Team will be given credit in the final project - and remember, all members will be treated equally in the collab, and everybody's opinion will be heard. There will be a manager (@wolfgirl152312) and heads for every department, of course, but everybody will have a say, and every vote will count - that's right, we'll all be voting! But only the manager will have the power to hire (firing will be a rare circumstance). Some of the features of GalacticaOS will be a scripting language, a block-based programming language, a calendar with events, and more! Anyways, I'd be glad to have you in the collaboration! Apply today, if applications are open! Use the links at the top to navigate through the topic! Have a nice day!

About
GalacticaOS is a collaboration for making the best OS Scratch has ever seen. It didn't start as a collab, of course. In November 2019, @wolfgirl152312 started making OwlOS (now deleted) for a coding contest but procrastinated to the point that she had to make half of the stuff on the day before the deadline, so it didn't turn out pretty good. So, in March 2020, she started working on (and released, but later deleted) GalacticaOS v.1.0, and planned on updating it a little bit every day, but it only reached version 1.1, which is, yes, pretty bad, so she deleted it and decided to work on it later. Then a month later, she released the trailer, just for promoting the OS, without showcasing any of the features, and it's still up. But then another month later, the release date (August 15, 2020) seemed a little too hard to keep up with. So, after much thought, she turned GalacticaOS into this collab! Then now, she extended the release date to the 1st of January, 2021! Later on, we decided to remove the time limit.

So, now, I'm going to tell you a little more about GalacticaOS, since nobody's going to join a collab without knowing all the details. If you are considering applying, then you must read the rules. But, it will be better to read all the important pages of the thread. Use the main menu to navigate!

Anyways, first of all, let me warn you that GalacticaOS will be hard to make. There will have to be artists, animators, coders, and more, and there will be heads for every department. But the heads are just there for making things easier. Everybody here is equal. But the manager will be the one sharing the final project, and will also be the only one to hire & fire. All leave applications will be accepted, as long as you don't leave too much.

GalacticaOS is supposed to be better than any other OS, and, even though we have a lot of ideas, more ideas will be better. We will need to make a block-based programming language inside of the OS, among other things, so don't expect anything to be easy. But something we have to say is that even if you are not really good at your chosen field, there is a chance that you will be hired. We believe that everybody has something great to contribute.

Now, if you really want to apply, but you feel like you lack enough skills, then don't be shy and give it a try! Remember, every small effort counts! We like to keep things nice and friendly here!
GalacticaOS is sure to be wonderful with all the skills you have to offer. Apply now! But make sure that applications are open if you are considering applying, it's written in the title - if they're not, drop a comment at wolfgirl152312's profile if you'd like to be notified when they reopen!

Considering applying? Thanks! Make sure you have read all the important pages first, though! Now, here's an important thing - if you apply for a certain job, but the amount of skill you have in it is low, then there's a possibility of one of many things happening - either, you'll get the job (yay!), or, you'll be given minor things to do related to your job, or you'll be given an entirely different job (wow), or, you'll be given one of the ‘special’ jobs (ideas, advertising, etc.), or you'll be rejected (I hope that doesn't happen). And, another important thing - remember what I said about the amount of skill you have not being an important part of applying? Well, it's different in some jobs, like head jobs. Anyways, I seem to have included a lot of the rules section here already - I thought you got to know before applying. Good luck with your application! Just fill in the form Please note that head jobs are not available through the application.
What's your Scratch nickname, if you have one?
Which job would you like?
How skilled are you in your chosen job?
Can you please state how active you are?
Have you read the rules?

Are you busy? Can't attend an important meeting? No worries, just fill in this form! Your leave will always be accepted
When are you going to be on leave?
What will you miss out on?
And don't worry about missing out on stuff, one of our wonderful team members will tell you all about what happened while you were gone! Is it going to be a task you won't be there for? It's totally fine, there are lots of people to do it instead!

Are you bored with GalacticaOS? Do you not feel like working with us anymore? It's totally fine, you can always quit! The only condition is that you should have contributed at least 1 small thing to the OS before leaving. You will be given credit for what you did in the final OS, even if you left before it was completed!
Are you sure you want to quit?
What was your favorite memory from working here? Was it fun? Did you enjoy yourself?
What were your contributions to the OS?
What should be written in the description of the finished project (everybody's words will be shown there, along with the instructions and everything. Remember, we are all a part of this!)?
Goodbye! We will miss you! We hope that you go on to do great things on Scratch or maybe even IRL! As a confirmation of your resignation, please type out the words here: I, <username here>, wish to resign from The GalacticaOS Collaboration. From this moment onwards, I am officially a resigned member of the collab.

Welcome to the wonderful Rules section! Be sure to read these carefully!
  1. Whenever you post something important or official, always add this to the top of the post:
[big]Galactica Os

    Links:
    Home | About | Forms | Rules | The Team | Open Positions | To Do | Links[/big]
Just copy-paste it! (Credit to @wgyt for that new navigation bar)
  2. Always be nice and friendly!
  3. Don't steal somebody else's work.
  4. Don't lie about anything related to the Collab.
  5. Treat everyone equally. Heads are just for making things easier. Do not make fun of anyone, even if you're in a head position.
  6. Don't be sad, if your design/animation/code didn't win in a vote - by the end, you would've contributed a great deal to the collab!
  7. Don't take way too frequent leaves. Leaves are always accepted, but that might change if you keep doing it on important meetings. Of course, leaves will always be granted for important things IRL, no matter how frequent.
  8. Always speak up if you have something important to say.
  9. Please don't use your Head powers (if you're in a head position) for anything bad.
  10. Never try to prevent anybody from having a say. In this collab, everybody has a voice. Always.
  11. Head jobs are not available through application - this is not a rule, but something you have to know. Elections will be held for Head positions.
  12. If you apply for a certain job, but the amount of skill you have in it is low, then there's a possibility of one of many things happening - either, you'll get the job. Or, you'll be given minor things to do related to your job, or you'll be given an entirely different job! Or you'll be given one of the ‘special’ jobs (ideas, advertising, etc.), or, sadly, you'll be rejected (I hope that doesn't happen).
  13. If you break a rule, you'll get a rule strike. Once you have 3 rule strikes, you'll be asked to leave But you will still be given credit in the final project, and you'll still have a place in the description of it, like everyone else!
  14. If you don't reply to an activity check, you'll get an activity strike. Once you have 2 activity strikes, you'll be asked to leave But you will still be given credit in the final project, and you'll still have a place in the description of it, like everybody else!
  15. Include the codeword in your application - it has to be hidden in a sentence, by the way. The codeword is ‘devices’. You can also use related words such as “phone” and “computer”.
  16. Please follow the thread after applying!
And that's it! Be sure to follow the rules

Important stuff from the old thread
@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
Galactic is related to galaxy. So, the background of the banner can be a galaxy. for example:-
https://www.google.comurlsa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fbackgroundss.wordpress.com%2F2013%2F07%2F25%2Fgalaxy%2F&psig=AOvVaw1ZbGxT7QZ47kx4Y4xfq7Xz&ust=1590303981858000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCNi3yJW2yekCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAJ

@ocross-tcsb:
I was thinking that the logo could say “Galactica OS” with the O in OS having a star in it.

@wolfgirl152312:
Set of designs:
https://www.canva.com/design/DAD9PmeeHLk/jlt_pGD5CloCFKp_5oXPiQ/view?utm_content=DAD9PmeeHLk&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=publishsharelink

@-MysticRose-:
I got together a bunch of galaxy style images we can use as backgrounds: https://www.canva.com/design/DAD-NFx4YG0/rqtaYhR98foxHTX0QjdhZw/view?utm_content=DAD-NFx4YG0&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=sharebutton

@cs3035775:
Logo design be like:

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
List of software I think the OS should have:
1. Platformer game
2. COVID-19 statistics(which should always be updated by some of us)
3. Peace app (This one will play peaceful music with some peaceful pastel cloud animation)

@jettypumpkin07:
Rather than just having one Snake game, why not have an entire app for the user's game collection?

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
We should have a journal app so that those who love to write a diary will love it.

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
What if we make a Developers' Story app?

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
We should make an animation app.

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
Some apps could be easter eggs…

@wgyt:
An app like Garageband.

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
We can name the app store Galactica Store.

@aspire-:
An app like Google Translate.

@jettypumpkin07:
For the block-based coding, I was thinking of making something like ‘ScratchJr on Scratch’, but with advanced features like variables, key presses, and more!

@ipaddude:
I would recommend making or modifying a scripting language with the capabilities of:
> Reading and writing to memory (can be just a list of values I guess)
> Taking ask() input and keypress input
> Arithmetic and boolean algebra
> Pen controls and drawing
> Maybe say() output?
> Setting the variables/lists for the OS to use such as desktopiconx and y and desktopiconnames
This would allow anyone to write programs for the OS without the need to remix the project or an external app developer (though maybe an IDE could further facilitate development).
This also makes distributing and adding default apps to the operating system easier, relying on comments or forums posts instead of remixes.
Finally, I feel that this is a much ‘cleaner’ way to develop programs because any amount of new programs could be made for the operating system without the need to create new sprites, costumes, scratch code, or variables. also, this is the method that most ‘real’ operating systems use

@T-tario:
I made an intro for another OS, maybe we can use it for inspiration and stuff? https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/400616717/

@-MysticRose-:
I have an idea for an intro that would fit:
https://www.canva.com/design/DAD-HTy1ZUI/bHpqHyfu7RJ_GPL7N0Mzlw/view?utm_content=DAD-HTy1ZUI&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=sharebutton

@ocross-tcsb:
Concept sketch for the desktop:

@wolfgirl152312:
UI idea:

@ocross-tcsb:
Replying to @wolfgirl152312's UI design, it looks cool, but round the corners of the left panel and maybe add some sort of large time display widget?

@wgyt:
We need widgets and a notification area on the desktop. And movable app icons.

@Joshia_T:
Skippable intro. Since space bar and mouse down are the most common thing to be pressed when people are bored waiting, I think we could instead of putting a button place a small tip maybe at the end of the animation, telling something like “you can skip the intro with space bar if you want” and it should not be ruining the aesthetic of the intro. This way after not knowing they could skip it they would watch it for the first time and then skip it whenever they feel like doing so.

@wgyt:
We could make the calendar art correspond with the season or month. Example: December has snow, gifts, and candles.

@jettypumpkin07:
For calendar events, there can be 5 different symbols/shapes that can appear next to the date.
e.g. There would be a star icon on Christmas Day or New Year's Eve.

@-MysticRose-:
I have an idea; for the calendar, I was thinking that I could write a short thing to come up at the start of every month, like:
Welcome back to Galactica OS!
We've got a very exciting month planned, with updates such as ___ scheduled for ___.
What's happening this month?
- Event, date
- Event, date
- Event, date
We here at GOS hope you have a wonderful month that's out of this galaxy - scratch on!
It would come up as a notification the first time you open the calendar app each month.

@MtnDewritos:
I wonder if it's a good idea to add information to the calendar about what happened on a given day if there is a holiday.

@MtnDewritos:
Calendar layout:

@MtnDewritos:
We could include everyone's birthday in the calendar?
@wgyt's birthday: 6th December
@Reebooted21's birthday: 8th October
@-MysticRose-'s scratchiversary: 16th February (on old account)
@wolfgirl152312's scratchiversary: 8th October (hey! that coincides with Ree's birthday!)
@An_Alien_In_Disguise's birthday: 18th June

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
Art for calendar-

8. @-MysticRose-:
Quotes for the calendar:
> Dream, for fantasy, is what makes life worth living.
> Smile, be happy, and feel joy.
> You have about 22,075,000 seconds in your lifetime. Don't waste a single one of them.
> Feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair.
> You are amazing, even if you don't know it.
> If you smile at someone, they will probably smile back - try it!
> Look - it's a new day.
> Welcome to the start of the rest of your life.
> You can do anything if you only believe in yourself.
> Try something new because if you don't you'll never know if you like it.

@GlitchedExe:
If you look at other OS's they all have news – Microsoft news, Apple news, etc. Shouldn't we have news too?

@ItsYoBoyHybrid:
The news app can just tell people about new features of the OS because most people who use the os probably don’t care about the news too much.

@BereketY:
The old news in the news app could have an archive on another project.

@ocross-tcsb:
My idea of how the finished OS should start:
1. Play startup animation and have a sprite called “init” set necessary variables and stuff
2. Show login screen
3. Have sprite “auth” check user lists to identify the correct user and retrieve their data and store it in local variables
4. “auth” sends commands to apps that the user has to set their variables and stuff
5. Home screen renders
6. Done

@Reebooted21:
Installation screen maybe?

@b1048546:
We don’t need a login page. We can actually have automated log-in. If that isn’t enough, we can have a little effect after you’re logged in saying welcome back username!

@wgyt:
Auto-login but we could show a screen like this:

We would replace winaero with the person's username (the fallback username would be guest) and add the time.

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
We can have pre-made shapes and stamps in GalactiBrush.

@ItsYoBoyHybrid:
We should add some custom templates to GalactiBrush.

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
We should have a rainbow colors tool in the paint app.

@wolfgirl152312:
I made a music project called Light and it's a small track and maybe we can use it in the OS:
https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/403067744/

@ocross-tcsb:
Since we can only really fit one song into the project for the music app and still have enough leftover space for other sound files (and have the OS load quickly enough), maybe there could be a song of the week for the music app.

@cs3035775:
Replying to @ocross-tcsb's Song of the Week suggestion, every Monday, the audio file can be manually switched, so the app can stay relevant!

@wgyt:
Replying to @ocross-tcsb's Song of the Week idea, why just one song? Can't we have 3?

1. @-MysticRose-:
I think for the art we should do a wide range of styles to get something that suits everyone.

@An_Alien_In_Disguise:
Do we need 3D paintings? I'm good at it.

@ocross-tcsb:
Some photography:

@wolfgirl152312:
The photography by @ocross-tcsb is awesome! Should we use them as desktop backgrounds?

@Reebooted21:
The web browser should run Scratch.

@wolfgirl152312:
For Scratch in the browser, we can make a Scratch-in-Scratch kinda thing but with the whole website redesigned to match with the OS's theme.

@wgyt:
An HTML-like language for the web browser.

@An_Alien_In_Diguise:
Let's make an app on types of cheese. Seriously. It will be interesting.

@wgyt:
Replying to @An_Alien_In_Disguise's Cheese App idea, we can call it “The Art of Cheese” and we can make it available on the Galactica Store.

@-MysticRose-:
What if we put together an instruction manual or similar and put it as an eBook?
We should add a list of all commands for the AI in the ebook app.

@wolfgirl152312:
Replying to @-MysticRose-s AI Commands In The Ebook App idea, I think we should put it as a separate ebook in the ebook app, titled “Talking to the AI: An Encyclopaedia of Commands and Instructions” or something. Or, we can have it as a section in the User Guide ebook.

@jettypumpkin07:
We could make a newsletter app with COVID-19 Statistics but the pandemic would probably be over by the time Galactica is fully complete, so there probably wouldn't be any need for that subject.

@hat6899:
COVID-19 Statistics App idea:
So we have whatever thumbnail that GalactiaOS COVID Statistics that fades out to show a list of buttons. Those buttons can have the names of countries that are… ‘hotspots’. Ex: India, USA, Brazil, etc. When someone clicks on let’s say India, then they will see those statistics. When they click the home button, they with go back to the buttons.

@BereketY:
The COVID-19 App can just be available in the App Store, and not be the main app.

@GlitchedExe:
Motto idea, “Reimagined Perfection”.

@cs3035775:
Language is important. Most projects are only one language. The best OS should be translated.

@GlitchedExe:
We need to make a calendar for employees because we're all in different timezones.

@wgyt:
The GalacticaOS Feed:
https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/411543/

@Reebooted21:
We need a save system.

@jettyprankster07:
Do we really need another Trailer if we can just have a Public Beta?
You know, how the Scratch Team released that unfinished Scratch 3.0 demo before the website was changed…

@Joshia_T:
We could have it in a list format and then export it as one whole string since the 10240 char limit has been removed. Though lists have 200,000 max I don't think anyone is going to hit it anytime soon. I can start working on a concept markup language that reads from lists maybe.

Also, I have a proposal for those working on the scripting side. I think we should work on apps keeping it always one sprite and have each broadcast prefixed with: (APP): Initiate, (APP): Start, (APP): Stop. This way we can easily just drag new sprites into the OS and they'll easily be loaded with:
when I receive [Calendar: Initiate v]
when I receive [Calendar: Start v]

broadcast (join (APP) [: Initiate])

broadcast (join (APP) [: Initiate]) and wait
And have this script on every app:
when green flag clicked
set [MODULE_AVAILABLE v] to [1]

([MODULE_AVAILABLE v] of (APP)) // will return "" if you don't have the app, will return 1 if you have the app
So now we can add apps just by copying the sprite and adding them into some sort of APP list.

(Just a suggestion for us to keep everything easily loaded into the main OS project since I saw the projects are pretty spread apart)
This also means that users can download the project and remove sprites manually to delete apps.

@Joshia_T
I've seen a lot of OS have their own AppStore, faking the download and adding it into their collection. So we're not actually downloading anything from the app store, right? I thought why not just make something sort of like Steam. We have a library of game/app collection then users can “add” the apps they want and hide the other apps they dislike, kind of like a favorites feature. I mean they already have their games “installed” anyways since scratch doesn't allow importing sprites without editing/ seeing inside.

@alphacoder
I was thinking of moving all variables to a list called variables, where each variable is like
(item (1 v) of [variables v] :: list) //this is the variable
replace item (1 v) of [variables v] with [whatever] //this changes the variable

I would suggest using a node.js server to update the COVID-19 stats, there has to be an api somewhere with the stats.

I don't think we should use this new forum until the manager knows about it.

Also I started working on a simple Calculator app. Link -> https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/434348480

I haven't really been active much since 2021. I now mostly look at / help with other people's projects, answer questions on the forums and work on stuff in other programming languages like JavaScript. Scratch is still awesome and I don't think I'll be leaving it any time soon. <3

Check out ocular, a Scratch forum search tool by jeffalo that helps find lost posts, or the Hidden Blocks TurboWarp extension I helped create that has a bunch of useful hacked blocks ready to add to your Scratch projects. (PR for details, see the Hidden Blocks category to the left of the editor.)

I think of myself as a skilled coder, but most of the time I work with node.js and SQL so I probably can't help you code anything. if you want me to make more desktop backgrounds or try and make some art for the UI I could probably try…

Could you change the ‘Os’ to ‘OS’ in the title as OS is an acronym for Operating System?
Also, the original thread says ‘GalacticaOS’ without a space? You might want to change that as well.

You're a designer so I would recommend working on a design for the home screen

Great Calculator, by the way, wolfgirl knows but asked if we did a poll. We did, while she was away.

Home- Short story- Writing proof.

My paws hit the ground, the wind and the train whistling past my ear. I let out a small yelp of surprise as I trip and stumble once I land, gathering my bearings at the thought of moving so fast and then just… Not. I turn round and take one last glance at the quickly retreating train that brought me here; completing my daring journey over mountains and oceans, fields and alleyways. Days I'd hitchhiked to get here, straying into other cats' territory just for the fun of it, although sometimes it was the only route I could take. I turn back around and pad forwards, where my final destination stands in front of me. It's been years since I was last here; years since I was kidnapped; years since I began my journey to return. I can hear excited meows coming from the cave entrance; for now I'm back, now I'm back with my family, now I am no longer trapped in a lonely world of loss and condemned silence.
Now I'm home.
Can you please state how active you are? 8
Have you read the rules? Yes- cat and codeword both begin with c.

The code and game spots may have been taken but it would be great for the team to have a few extra features and games

I am currently working on a song maker that I can make into a one sprite app with good graphics and added features.

Instead of just making different wallpapers, wouldn't it be cooler to make entire themes (icons, wallpapers, system styles, and fonts specialized for each theme<closing parenthesis> like in Android but that'd just make everybody's lives harder…
Wow, this is a great idea!

You haven't changed the title.
Do you mean that this was intentional? It's fine if it is, just wondering.

I think we should just stick with the old team, or at least who's been active on the last 3-5 pages.
