“This Account Has Been Deleted”
So I remember when I was younger and people really liked those “namesnipe” accounts, I had wanted to make one. I noticed that “lol” didn’t exist, so I decided to make my own account called lol. So, I went onto account creation and did the username “lol” but it said “this account already exists!”. (Or whatever they say, it’s something along those lines)
I was confused by this, as there was no person with the username “lol”. It turns out that an account with that username DOES exist, but it was deleted. Because usernames that don’t exist yet and accounts that are deleted all show the same “whoops our server is scratch’ing its head” message, it can cause some confusion on whether there never was an account with that username or if there was one but it was deleted.
Here’s a link in case you want to understand more https://scratch.mit.edu/users/lol/
(I remembered it as being OMG I wanted to make a username of, but I checked and that account seems to still exist. Huh.)
SO! Here’s my suggestion.
Rather than just saying the standard “our server is scratch’ing it’s head”, it would have an additional thing saying “this account has been deleted”.
And, with usernames that have never been made into accounts yet, it could say “this username/account doesn’t exist!“. Perhaps there could also be a “did you mean….” thing, where it shows similar usernames which are real just in case it was a typo.
For instance, someone tried to view the profile of someone named “cat”, but they wrote “cats” instead and that account didn’t exist. The message will say “is it possible that you meant @cat, @cats1, @catss?” which helps them find the user they were looking for, which was cat.
This could help with some confusion. Let me know if you have any questions.
This adds some more explanation as per why this would be a good idea.

To everyone saying that showing an account was deleted would be bad in the case that the user doesn't want people to know that their account was deleted: The account was deleted. It now shows a 404 page instead of their profile. And if that person knows they aren't misspelling the username, they now know for sure that their account was deleted. You can't hide that. The page wouldn't say why it got deleted, just that it did somehow. If you went to the sign-up page and entered that username or added a “/followers” at the end of the URL, you would know that the account got deleted. This really just saves those extra steps.

I think this is a good idea, especially for users who try to pick a username, find out that it is “taken” and try to search for the user and find out later that the account got deleted. I also love the did you mean “@example, @example1, @example2” as it would be a good idea for users that don't remember the exact spelling of the username.

It's not sensitive to capital. So that wouldn't be implimented.
https://scratch.mit.edu/users/Shajiui_Da_Black_Fox is the same as https://scratch.mit.edu/users/ShAjiUi_Da_BlAck_FOX or any other “modifications” Uh- I can't think of a word to describe it.

This would be a really great implementation, and reduce confusion!
Also what if you banned the name recursion it could say "Do you mean @Recursion? And it does that over and over again but then again Scratch would probably get sued by Google and now I'm just rambling…

I think this would be complex, and have no really useful function. The point of a 404 is that it's generally applicable to any request that the server can't find (or something like that).

aII toasters toast toast, but what happens when there are no longer toasters being produced? will their technology simply become obsolete, with humans moving onto bigger, better things? will toast become a distant memory, written in textbooks of the future as foods us simpler generations ate? who's to say! society is constantly moving, changing, evolving, ideas being built upon, improved upon, theories being proven or disproven. are we but a blip on the timeline? sure, our names may not be remembered, but that's not the point. you can make a change. you can make a difference. you can make the world better, even if you don't know yet. and the first step is to go for it. even if you are afraid of failure. going back to the example of toasters, do you know off the top of your head who invented them? no? have you used one? probably. so, even if you don't remember my name, if I was able to help awnser your question, that is enough. if I was able to help you, even in the slightest way, this could push you to continue with scratch and not give up after the program crashes, and maybe one day learn other programming languages and change the world. everything is a cause and effect reaction, new inventions lead to the technology of the future, and even as the generations of the past are slowly forgotten, their influence lives on to this day, affecting how the world eventually turned out and how it will be for generations to come.
and, without toasters, we wouldn't have toast.

You can already tell if an account is deleted rather than just non-existant. Deleted accounts still have a followers page. For privacy reasons, the Scratch Team does not share such account information with anyone other than the account owner. In particular, a banned user may not want to reveal the fact that they were banned to the public.

It wouldn't show if the account was deleted because they misbehaved, it would just say the account was deleted. There's a variety of reasons that your account could have been deleted. I think this would be considered as rejected.8.4 Show when users are banned

“This Account Has Been Deleted”
One downside I can see to this is that some people might want to hide the fact that they deleted their account, but I believe that this is a completely invalid reason. This is because if a user gets banned, that could be embarrassing to some users. Deleting their account is the user's choice. The only real downside I can see is that some people might mistype a user's name, and then think that that account is deleted, but you fixed that by suggesting the ‘did you mean’ box. But how would that box work?
All in all, I can't see too many reasons not to add it, but I also can't see many reasons to add it, either. It just feels unnecessary and situational.
