As we saw from a cutscene, Furbottom's body didn't sink. Hatty sank to the bottom of the ocean.

My theory is that hatty was dead but when the hat fell on his head everything was all like BLARGHHGHVGNMHJFJKY RESERECTION :O
Or hatty was still alive but limp and was in a catatonic state after mopping and crying for days and it led 2 where he couldn't control himself .
When the hat fell on his head it released him from the bondage.

Was Hatty Dead?
Easy, dead bodies float, they don't sink. This could not be just a simple error by a developer, because during the credits, you can see the ship was patched together by cat skin. The cats had to be dead, and like I said before, dead bodies FLOAT.

How could he had held is breath during the song “Buckle Your Pants”? The song was exactly 1 minute, 23 seconds long. German freediver Tom Sietas held his breath for 22 minutes, 22 seconds! That proves it is possible.

If Hatty Wasn't Dead, Then Why Was He Not Moving?
When the narrator was talking about Hatty being a vegetable, he did not actually turn into a vegetable. He is in a vegetative state, when you have no feelings. The cause of this can be of depression. And well, he was crying, a sign of depression. When the author said right before the song “And I got just the right recipe,” and started singing “Buckle Your Pants” maybe he was trying to cheer Hatty up, supported by the fact that when the hat landed on his head again, it turned green. Green means good, positive, HAPPY. So maybe the theory that the author made about the hat isn't true, maybe all of them aren't true. That's why when he was crying before with the hat on, the hat was red. So maybe the hat expresses his feelings, there is no curse or blessing. It's almost like a mood ring, except it's a “Hat Ring”.

In the beginning of battle block hatty does not have a hat it is later on that he is “taken hostage”by the hat when he puts it on or cats put it on whatever then he so called dies in the end of the game… but in castle crashers he is alive and guess what with a hat so it had to have happened after battle block and he may not remember anything and have amnesia from lack of oxygen.

Wait what about him saying “no” over again? Or was that from Space Bear in pit people saying “no” because other Space Bear was about to die?

At this point we can assume he lived because of pit people. But honey kiss (the bear in pit people) used hatty as a laser and started destroying stuff in anger. then hatty disappears from the scene, so he's probably just floating in space. At this point we can assume he's still alive because if he can survive at the bottom of the ocean, he can survive in space.
