(my book, I know I have a project about it, BUT STILL)
Chapter one
“Miss, miss!” I woke to the ticket collector shaking me awake. I shifted. Then shuffled in my backpack. Pulled out my ticket, and handed it to the lady. She glanced at it, handed it back.
She eyed me curiously.
“Aren't your parents coming with you miss?“
”No."
Since I wasn’t in the mood to chat, she moved on. That hurt. Just the thought of my parents hurt. They had gone missing two months ago. As soon as that had happened, I had been rushed over to Aunty Mea. Who is shy and small. When I asked which school I would be going to. She Smiled at me widely, and said that she meet a young lady (which means she was most likely fifty) Who had said that she had friends who go there and it would be wonderful for me. Now I'm on my way to this school. I stopped my train of thought, to listen to the click-clack o the train. I checked my watch. Half-past eleven.I pulled out my book of ropes It was big and heavy. I open it, took a deep breath and dug my noes into it. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get my noes out of the for a while.
After a while I think that it was seventeen stops, a small family got onto the train, the mother was fairly young, blond hair and blue eyes, the dad brown hair, brown eyes and a smile crinkled face, then a boy round about my age, twelve, brown hair, and brown eyes. They asked me if they could sit with me because everywhere else is taken. I said yes.
The mother smiled brightly, tried to engage the dad into conversation, he wasn’t listening. She a little less enthusiastically tried to talk to the son. No luck. He wasn’t listening. Like father, like son. Giving up on them she turned to me. Smiled, and tried me.
“Hello, we’re so sorry to invade your space, I’m Mrs Mars.”
“Hello,” I wasn’t going to give her longer than one words answers. The smile didn’t fade.
“Were are your parents?” She was beaming at me. Way to glade to have a conversation.
“Away,”
“Oh, how lovely! I wish my husband would take me away!”
“They aren’t away, away. They’re missing,” So much for one word replies.
“Oh,” For a moment she was silent. Then desperate to change the conversation she asked,
“Where are you headed?”
“Saint’s school for bright young ones,” I cringed at the name. The smile widened.
“Well, thats were Joshua is going! Aren’t you Josh?”
The boy looked up from is book.
“Sure, whatever you say.” He answered.
“Don’t mind him, he must be nevus.” She said desperately.
I nodded. Not to sure what to think of the family.
“Where did you here of this school?” I asked.
“Oh, a man told me that he had friends there and it would be perfect for Josh’s education.”
I felt sick. Those were the exact words Aunty Mea, had said.
“How nice,” I said through gritted teeth. Finally shacking the conversation off. She looked out the window.
I dug my head into my book. After a while, Josh finally spoke up.
“Wow, you read fast,”
I looked up surprised.
He carried on, “You read really fast.”
“Oh, I didn’t realise.”
“You didn’t realise?”
I shrugged.
He shook his head.
“What’s your name anyway?”
“Owla,” I answered.
“That a nickname or something?”
“Or something. ”
“Is it your name?”
“One of them,”
He looked confused, but didn’t push it.

“Next stop, Donna station,” said a voice through a speaker on the train.
“Thats your stop, Joshua,” Said Mr. Mars. “And yours, Owla…” He said uncomfortable.
I finished my next book, How to survive the wild. Put it into my backpack, and sighed.
“We are arriving in Donna station in under five minutes,” Said the same unreal voice over the speaker.
“No we aren’t,” I looked at a ruff map I’d drawn when I’d gotten on. “We still have fifteen minutes left.”
“No we don’t,” Said Mr. Mars.
“Yes, we do,” I said.
“Lets place a bet. If you win you can get a lift to, Saint’s school for bright young ones. And if I win I win you have to walk or whatever you were gonna do to get there. Deal?”
“Deal,” I said looking him straight int he eye. Mrs. Mars opened and closed her mouth. Clearly no one questioned, Mr. Mars. Ever.
We checked the time and waited.
I won. I was a few seconds early. But still. Mr. Mars was impressed.
“Is that all you have?” Josh asked as we got out I grabbed my backpack. Josh doesn’t pact light. He had three backpacks, and a duffle bag that was big enough to fit me in. I nodded.
“We rented a car. It’s just round the corner,” Mrs. Mars said quietly.
I smiled at her,”I’m good.”
“Are you sure? You won the bet far and square,” Said Mr. Mars.
“I prefer my own way,” I answered.
“Which is???” Asked Mr. Mars.
“Running,”
“Thats stupid! It’s a least five kilometres! We’ll get there faster!”
“How sure are you?”
Mr. Mars laughed, “Wanna place a bet??? But we have a CAR rememberer??”
“Sure,” My turn to laugh.
“What do you want to bet?”
“You choose,” I was suddenly aware of the other Mars members staring at me.
“Twenty rand?”
“You’re the boss!”
“Do you even have twenty rand on you?”
“No,”
“You’re soooooo reckless,”
“I take that as a complement, James Philip Mars,”
“Where did you get my name?” He accused.
“Your briefcase, how very reckless of you, sir.” I grinned
