I have a tip for those of you who have laggy projects. Use a game loop. A game loop constantly broadcasts messages to all sprites.

when green flag clicked
forever broadcast [Check player controls v] and wait
end

Scratch isn't that good at running lots of loops at the same time. That makes them slow down. If other sprites are all doing things because of a single loop, then it will make the game run faster. Be careful not to use other loops because they will slow down the game loop.
