Note: I'm guessing this has already been suggested so please don't comment saying it has.
Alright, I'm guessing a large part of the community agrees that a 500 letter max for comments is too low.
First of all, I don't know why the community has this. I've never seen a community that has this, and the Scratch Community is (overall) pretty mature. I must admit though, it's very easy to make a Scratch account and people sometimes will just make a new account to spam on.
So, what I suggest is an increase of the comment max that only applies to Scratchers, not New Scratchers. This increase could me maybe to 800. I'm sure there will still be a lot of people who disagree with this.
Another suggestion is a better spam system. I know that on Youtube there is a system where you can up-vote a comment or down-vote one. Comments that receive maybe -10 votes will be hidden. Note: You can still view the comment, but it will say something like, “This comment has received a lot of negative votes. Press show if you want to see it.” Any comment that gets a block will be auto-reported. This is also a good idea because it will allow Scratchers to up-vote constructive, kind comments.
A third suggestion if the other two don't work is to make it so that Scratchers can have a higher comment max on only their own projects. An extension idea to this is if you comment on a friend of yours project you can have a higher comment max. By friends, I mean people who are following each other (both ways).
Tldr; The comment max needs to be increased and I give three good ways to do this.

I support ideas 1 and 3. Even though there is an easy hack with Inspect Element to get around the limit, I support.
But, I only use the Inspect Element hack when I need some extra characters for my comment.

The comment limit has never really bothered me; is there any possible way where you can split it into multiple comments without loss of continuity?
The second suggestion is like things that are commonly rejected because you know our community.
I don't get how the first part of 3 will help; what can't you put in the Project Notes or split into multiple comments? And the second part will inevitably be abused by F4Fers.

I'm against suggestion two because scratch is a community with no hate. And down voting comments would be something like this.

3 is okay.
But it's a little confusing.

I like the third idea, but some of it would be hard to implement.

Support 1 and 3.
Scratchers should have a 750 max, I think.
The game owner should have a 5000 max and friends should have a 1000 max, unless they're still new scratchers. (The owner should still get 1000 though)

I haven't found myself needing more than 500 characters per comment… yet. But I'm a little prolix with my posts, and that character limit really helps me in cutting down my thoughts and getting my point across. So I guess I'll support suggestions #1 and #3, just for those individuals who seem to need it.
Potential numbers:
500 character maximum for New Scratchers (overrides all below).
750 character maximum for Scratchers.
1000 character maximum for mutual followers (an “I'm following you, you're following me” kind of thing).
1000 character maximum for project owners.

Support for 1 and 3. I believe it should be 800 for all. Kinda unfair.

The only problem I see with a higher comment limit is is could be easy to hide inappropriate messages in them.
So if the limit is raised, it probably should only be raised to a max of 1000 and no more than that.

I don't see much upside to any of these suggestions, excluding maybe the third one (assuming the second one is removing the comment length limit but changing filters). Sure, I'd like more space for my comments, but think: 50% of the people who would use this heightened comment limit would spam, the other 50% would actually do something non-spam-ful. Not many people rant for that long on some things (okay maybe I count as one of those people) and using “yada yada yada and then…” *reply* “…and then yada yada yada” is fine enough for long comments. I don't support this one, because it seems Scratch Team has already placed this as high as they can before spammers make comments take up half a page.

Please give each suggestion it's own topic so it gets more attention.
1. In what scenario would you need to use 800 characters? 500 is enough. The only scenario I can see 800 being good is when you're citing websites. Other than that, making new replies is fine.
2. I support this, but I saw another topic about an upvote/downvote system. Za-Chary said it probably won't be added, since Scratchers may use it in a competition, or for bragging rights, such as “My comment got more likes than yours, haha!”
3. How would this be useful again, besides the scenario I said in 1?

-snip-I think this is okay since the suggestions are related. The common goal is to increase the character limit, and the OP is proposing three ways to do that.
Also, keep in mind that this post is from 5 years ago, so maybe you should assume that the OP is no longer seeing this as discussion continues.

@Green_Cookie The forums have changed since 2014. I've noticed some really old topics brought up in Suggestions where experienced users at the time could get away with just saying +1, rather than Support/No Support, and then having to state a reason.

I support. 500 is WAY too low! we could go with 1,275 characters instead of 500.

Can you please give me an example of a situation where you would need at least 1275 characters?
