time limit [limit session time to promote healthy choices]

I also think that scratch team should impose a time limit of maybe two hours a day for each user as it is quite easy to spend the entire day on scratch and encourages people to go outside. Thanks for reading

A time limit for what exactly?

time limit [limit session time to promote healthy choices]

One problem with this is that it could restrict a Scratch Team member's ability to do their job, as we often work more than 2 hours a day. Of course, that could easily be fixed; just don't let the time limit apply to Scratch Team members.

But, the other problem I can see with this is in regards to educational purposes. Let us assume that a student uses Scratch for an hour during class, and then they are assigned homework that is due the next day. Suppose it takes them more than one hour to do it, since they're not getting the concept. Unfortunately, due to the time limit, they can't work on their homework anymore and must turn it in unfinished. I imagine such a time limit would dissuade users from continuing to pursue Scratch (which is technically your intent — but not in the right way).

In addition, many users wouldn't necessarily be persuaded to go outside for this; they would just go onto YouTube or some other website that doesn't have a time limit. There certainly is an issue of kids needing to make healthy choices, but in terms of technology usage, that is largely up to their own discretion and willpower.

The “really late” thing is a problem because people from many different countries use Scratch. What is 3:00am in the United States would be 9:00am in the United Kingdom.

Although we could perhaps look at the country that the user sets in order to determine their time zone, it is not exact. In the United States, 3:00am in California is 6:00am in New York. Other countries have multiple time zones, as well. In addition, users would just change their country to go around this restriction.

The other problem I can see with this is that it would restrict the Creativity aspect of Scratch: one enters Scratch, stays for a bit of time, wants to create a project; then is instantly kicked out because of the time limit. This wouldn't encourage creativity and is bad for a lot of other aspects @Za-Chary* said.

What about something that just reminds you of taking a break after you're on Scratch for a long time? That can be disactivated in the options tab.

No support.

I understand that you're trying to help people go outside but this wouldn't be the best solution. People could use alternate accounts and swap between them when the time was up, and use [DATA EXPUNGED] if you decided to make the time limit apply to an IP address.

Also, how do you plan to enfore a limit to screen time? As @Za-Chary said, if they couldn't do Scratch they would probably just end up doing something less productive on the computer instead of Imagining, Programming, and Sharing (like watching YouTube and stuff), because I highly doubt anybody is going to listen to a rule like that if it's imposed by the website.

I do spend an average of about 2.5 hours a day replying to comments and putting together projects, so aside from all mentioned above, this would just ruin me. If a rule like this existed, I wouldn't have gotten to 1000+ posts very fast.

No Support. I know you want people to take care of their health and not spend their entire day just doing Scratch, but it should be the responsibility of yourself to decide how much time you spend on Scratch. Also, stopping people going on Scratch really late would be very problematic for people like me who live 12 hours ahead of America, meaning when I'm active, it's the middle of the night in the US.

No Support.

Like mentioned above, this could negatively effect students, as well as schools, that use Scratch. It would restrict the time that schools use Scratch, and I fear that they may want to not use it all together. And what if you are working on a project that's going to take you a few hours, but it's due tomorrow? That wouldn't be good…

I understand and like your idea of “getting people outside”, again like said above, many people probably wouldn't go outside, and would just do something else. And that something else probably being staring at their device's screen.

I think maybe a pop-up should show after so much time. Like “Don't forget to take a break!” ?

I believe that it's important that you take initiative to stay healthy, and that you shouldn't need to be reminded.

No Support. Imagine a person is making a big game and suddenly the website says: “Time to go out! Leave this site for now!” This would discourage him/her.

No support either. I don't support any form of “warning” or popup that warns you that you've been on Scratch for x amount of time, for the same reasons as above. It's not changing that limit that will change one's opinion.

no support. lets just say some educational coding class that uses scratch goes on it for more than 2 hours. the limit would stop the class from working on scratch.

What if you left your computer open on scratch? Half an hour gone already. Now you start that 2 hour script, scratch closes, it doesn't save, script gone.

I know you care for others' health, but 2 hours is rather short. I myself spend about 3 hours browsing comments.

Negative.

I spent at least 8 hours on Scratch. Well, not really.

I was off doing something else but Scratch was open in my browser. I wasn't doing anything with it, but it was open. It's called AFK (Away From Keyboard).
