More Scratch Updates!

Hi again!

We wanted to let you know about some of the things we’ve been working on since our last post, updating you about our progress and plans for Scratch 3.0. Our focus has been on trying to make sure Scratch performs well and is usable by as many people as possible. We are still working on many features and some remaining bugs, but here are some notes about the progress we have made!

Features

  • Links to Scratch (i.e. links that start with https://scratch.mit.edu/) in project “Instructions” and “Notes and Credits” are now clickable links
  • Translations have been updated for many languages, and support has been added for Bulgarian, Slovak, Latvian, and Norsk Nynorsk
  • Performance has been improved in many ways! A few highlights:
    - Switching to a different sprite, editor tab, or language is faster
    - Running projects from within the editor is much faster
    - The sound editor performs better, especially with larger sounds
  • You can now click on the “See Data” button for projects that use Cloud Variables to see recent changes to cloud variable values
  • The right-click menu for sprites has been reordered and had some visual updates to make deleting sprites more clear

Bug fixes

  • Fixed the issue where the project page would stop working for some computers with smaller screen sizes.
  • Fixed an issue where slider minimum & maximum values weren’t saving and loading properly for some projects made in Scratch 2.0.
  • Fixed an issue where deleting an event block (e.g. “when sprite clicked”) would delete the entire stack of blocks unexpectedly.
  • We fixed various issues with things rendering in the wrong order.
  • Fixed an issue where trying to add a sprite from the backpack when there were no other sprites would not work.
  • The loading screen would not display properly when opening a project in embed or fullscreen views. Now this loading screen properly displays in these situations.
  • Fixed an issue where switching to a sprite which had no sounds while a project was running would cause the project to crash.
  • Fixed an issue where projects would pause when your mouse was over the green flag or stop button. You can now hover over these buttons and the project will continue running.
  • Fixed a set of issues that could cause thumbnail images in the editor to turn into black squares momentarily.
  • Fixed a set of issues that could cause the “touching color" block to improperly detect that it was touching a color it wasn’t with bitmap images.
  • Fixed an issue where the “Add to Studio” option could show options for studios you couldn’t actually add your project to.

As always, if you find a bug or are still having problems with something above that we say is fixed, please let us know in the Bugs & Glitches forum: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/3/

If you would like to share your ideas or suggestions for future iterations of Scratch, please share them with us in the Suggestions forum: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/1/

Scratch on!
