Bᴀᴄᴋɢʀᴏᴜɴᴅ

Donkey Kong has taken hostage of Jumpman's girlfriend, Pauline. Jumpman must rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong's evil clutches before time runs out!

Cᴏɴᴛʀᴏʟʟɪɴɢ Jᴜᴍᴘᴍᴀɴ

You control Jumpman by using the left and right arrow keys to move left and right, the up and down arrow keys to climb up and down ladders and the space bar (or z key) to jump.

If playing on a mobile device you can use the screen controls. The four controls on the left are for moving left and right and for climbing up and down ladders. The three controls on the right are for jumping to the left, on the spot and to the right.

Fᴜʟʟ ᴘʟᴀʏᴛʜʀᴏᴜɢʜ

Full video playthrough of all stages!

Tʜᴇ ʜᴀᴍᴍᴇʀ

Some stages contain hammers which Jumpman may use to destroy barrels, beams, fireballs, firefoxes and cement pies. Once in use, a hammer will work for eleven seconds before disappearing. Note that the hammer doesn't make Jumpman invulnerable. If, for example, a barrel rolls into the back of Jumpman while he holds the hammer, the hammer will not protect him. It's also worth noting that Jumpman can neither climb ladders or jump when holding the hammer.

Sᴛᴀɢᴇ 1 - Tʜᴇ ʙᴀʀʀᴇʟ sᴛᴀɢᴇ

Jumpman must reach the top of the level to rescue Pauline. This is made more difficult as Donkey Kong is constantly hurling barrels and beams at him. If a beam reaches the oil barrel at the bottom of the screen, a fireball will come out of it!

Sᴛᴀɢᴇ 2 - Tʜᴇ ᴄᴏɴᴠᴇʏᴏʀ ʙᴇʟᴛ sᴛᴀɢᴇ

Jumpman must reach the level where Donkey Kong is standing in order to rescue Pauline. There are conveyor belts on different levels of this stage which make movement more difficult for Jumpman. He must avoid the concrete pies and fireballs and negotiate the extending ladders in order to reach the top. The conveyor belt on the top level where Donkey Kong stands will change direction each time Donkey Kong reaches the end of the conveyor belt. The conveyor belt on the bottom level will change direction each time Donkey Kong reaches the left side of the belt he is standing on. The conveyor belts in the middle of the screen both move continually towards the oil barrel from which fireballs are created.

Sᴛᴀɢᴇ 3 - Tʜᴇ ᴇʟᴇᴠᴀᴛᴏʀ sᴛᴀɢᴇ

Jumpman must use the elevators to cross the screen and must then avoid the springs that Donkey Kong is throwing at him. This level is all about careful timing!

Sᴛᴀɢᴇ 4 - Tʜᴇ ʀɪᴠᴇᴛ sᴛᴀɢᴇ

Jumpman must remove all eight rivets from the level. When this is done the construction will collapse, Donkey Kong will fall to his doom and Jumpman will be reunited with Pauline! The firefoxes on this level always spawn from the opposite side of the screen to where Jumpman is standing.

Oʀᴅᴇʀ ᴏғ sᴛᴀɢᴇs

In the original Japanese version each stage would appear in order with the level being completed once the fourth stage has been beaten. In the US version this was changed somewhat.

Level 1: Stages 1, 4
Level 2: Stages 1, 3, 4
Level 3: Stages 1, 2, 3, 4
Level 4: Stages 1, 2, 1, 3, 4
Level 5: Stages 1, 2, 1, 3, 1, 4

All levels after five retain the same pattern.

Note that as of today (11 Jul, 25) I've added an option to play in the order of the Japanese version. To do this, press ‘J’ whilst hitting the green flag to start the game. Note that scores from this version will not register in the high score table, as it's far easier to get high scores with this order.

Fɪʀᴇʙᴀʟʟs ᴀɴᴅ Fɪʀᴇғᴏxᴇs

It is not advisable to attempt to jump over fireballs or firefoxes as their movement is very erratic and they can change direction at any point! Note that they are able to traverse ladders… even if the ladder is broken! It is useful to note that, although they can climb up ladders at any time, they will only climb down ladders if Jumpman is lower down the screen than they are. This is particularly useful to know for the rivet stage! Both fireballs and firefoxes are unable to cross gaps (such as the ones made when Mario removes the rivets in stage 4).

Usᴇғᴜʟ ɪɴғᴏʀᴍᴀᴛɪᴏɴ

Jumpman is able to bounce off the extremes of the screen! If you jump into the left or right side of the screen, he will bounce back the way he came from. It's debatable whether this is useful, but it's accurate to the original arcade game.

Jumpman gains points for jumping over obstacles. The more obstacles he clears in a single jump, the more points he scores.

Touching Donkey Kong at any point results in Jumpman losing a life.

Pauline's possessions are scattered around some of the stages and can be collected by Jumpman for extra points.

Pauline must be rescued from each stage before the bonus timer runs out. Failing to do so will result in Jumpman losing a life.

Jumpman can not survive a fall greater than his own height.

Why do I keep referring to Mario as Jumpman? That's because there was no Mario character when this game was made in 1981. The character was originally called Jumpman (whose trade was that of a carpenter and not a plumber) or, at least, that's what I'm getting from Wikipedia. It's the same fella that we all know and love though

This is a fun one! I especially like the intro scene with the monkey stomping and the floors bending down to create the level. It was a little strange at when I was dying by falling to far, I thought it was a glitch until I read this forum topic that explains jumpman can only fall his own height. However, I assume this isn't an issue for people who have played this game before and already know how it works.

Now, as is the case with these older arcade games, I'm not too good at them so no laughing! But, I can't get past level 1 stage 4. I finally figured out that you need to hit those yellow buttons, but I keep running out of time on this one. Any tips?

Also, I was really confused by those buttons on the side, but now that I know those are for phones that is a really cool idea! Would be interesting if there was a way to detect what device the player is using…

Edit: I'm not sure if this a bug or not, but I can't seem to jump while I have the hammer.

Oh I didn't realize the beams hitting the oil barrel created the fireballs, thats really cool!

Hopefully. I'd leave more detailed instructions in the actual instructions panel if it weren't so frustrating having to repeatedly reply to comments with “The instructions say…”

It is a pretty intensive level to complete before time runs out. You'll rarely have time to use both hammers. There are a few useful tips to remember. 1) the firefoxes always spawn on the opposite side of the screen to Jumpman and 2) Firefoxes can go up ladders at any time but will only go down them if Jumpman is lower down the screen than they are. Also, the play-through of the level in the GIF in the first forum entry might be helpful.

I find it absolutely impossible to play on my mobile phone but I thought it might be playable on a tablet. I haven't tried it yet though. It's a shame the Scratch doesn't allow the detection of multiple touches - that's why I had to add jump-left and jump-right buttons.

Edit: I'm not sure if this a bug or not, but I can't seem to jump while I have the hammer.

Not a bug but something I should probably add to the initial post. Thanks for mentioning it

There should definitely be an infinite lives feature and skip because I just don't get to experience all the levels because of game overs. Good recreation and fun as well

Seems like a very fair point. You can now choose between easy, normal and hard difficulty settings (with the original setting now referred to as the “hard” one).

Correct - though I'm not sure what you're asking about them

What are firefoxes? I don’t recognise the name Firefox from my mario knowledge?

It's the name given to the fireball-type creatures on the rivets level

I thought I would submit a bug report since a Scratch comment section wouldn't be the best place to report the bugs.

KNOWN BUGS:
First 3 are from my Scratch comment on the bugs in the project, rest are ones I found on my own.

1. The ladder in the factory stage does not pause, even when the hammer is still hitting something.
2. Fire won't stop spawning on the construction stage and in the factory stage even after the level is completed.
3. Barrels when spawned don't wait for the hammer to stop hitting something.
NEW BUGS:
4. The leftmost level on the second floor of the factory stage, you can't get to the top of the ladder unless you climb back down at the start of the ladder.
5. After giving the characters separate jump heights in my remix, Luigi, whenever jumping under where a rivet should be on the first floor in the rivet stage, creates a hole in the floor.

I'll add more to this list if I find any more.

Thanks. Though I don't think any of those affect gameplay in a significant way so I probably won't be digging into the code after so many years since it was shared.

That one isn't a bug as it's absolutely fine in the game as it is and only occurs with your notifications
