SDS Feedback (Help Improve The SDS!)

As we are trying to improve constantly on user experiences in the SDS, the SDS curators and I are looking for your feedback on past SDS's.
When an SDS is over, post your opinion on it or any suggestions using the template below, so that we can improve in the future!

This forum is not for asking questions about the SDS, asking to be an SDS curator, suggesting SDS themes, or asking what the next theme will be.

SDS Feedback (Help Improve The SDS!)

I do believe that this is better suited for either, Show and Tell or Collaboration, seeing as the description of this forum is, “Discuss ideas for making improvements to Scratch.”

Edit: My mistake…

Scratch Design Studios are a feature in Scratch, so this is in the right section.

I think you're confusing it with something else, I'm pretty sure Scratch Design Studios have been here since the start of Scratch 1.0.

The SDS must be more open.

“Rule Britannia, Britannia rule the waves. Britons never never shall be slaves!”

“Born a soldier, from the horseback to the skies - that's where the legend will arise… and he's flying… Higher! The king of the sky! He's flying too fast and he's flying too high!”

“The courageous Mongol Genghis, the sublime lord Genghis.”

“Oh, du Schoner Westerwald!”

SDS Feedback (Help Improve The SDS!)

SDS Name: Create Your Own Restaurant

What was good:
  • I liked the way that it was open-ended regarding what medium the project had to be in - it could be a game, and animation, an interactive story… there were tons of possibilities, and the imagination could run wild with them.

What could be improved:
  • I think one thing that could be potentially improved for future SDS's is the theme. Maybe instead of centering it on an idea (e.g. “restaurant” or “time travel”), it could be more broad with regard to those things but more focused on the project itself and the technical stuff related to it (e.g. “cloning” or “lists”). I can understand why the Scratch Team might not want this, because a specific idea-centered theme might appeal more to younger users, but I just think that this might be an interesting suggestion.

How this could be improved:
  • See above.

Suggestions?
  • I don't really have any right now off the top of my head, I'll come back if I have one.

Thanks for your feedback, I think that the SDS which we are doing next probably won't focus on those aspects as we already have two ideas that we will probably pick out of, but I will pass along your idea for SDS's in the future!

SDS Feedback (Help Improve The SDS!)

SDS Name: Monochromatic

What was good:
  • The theme is one of the more creative the SDS has come up with.

    How this could be improved:
  • To push creativity even more, I'd say make the restriction code-based, for example, they must include set drag mode [draggable v] in the project. It encourages creativity by making the participants think what they could use the block for, rather than simply lowering down the saturation of their project and changing the hue. Making them use the block sparks ideas in them: Oh, what about a game where you have a selection of Hogwarts students where you can drag forward to manipulate a boggart? Oh, what about a Quidditch simulator where you're a Beater and you lose points when a person gets beat by a Bludger? The possibilities are endless. But, monochrome, it doesn't power the bulb. It doesn't light the spark. And it doesn't turn on the light that is creativity.

    Suggestions?
    • I've obviously just told you them.

They weren't necroposting, this is in the suggestions forum, and it's a sticky, they were suggesting an improvement which could be made to the SDS.

SDS Feedback (Help Improve The SDS!)

SDS Name: Monochromatic

What was good:
  • How wide this is. It has the right amount of restrictions (has to be interactive and monochromatic) but not too many, making it so that there is a wide possibility of projects to make.
  • The suggestions! The description offered some suggestions of things people could make if they had a hard time getting an idea.
  • The speed. Each comment I posted, whether it'd be me saying that I got an idea or me posting a link to the project I made, the replies are insanely fast (less than 10 minutes).

What could be improved:
  • Not sure, it was a pretty good SDS.

Suggestions?
  • This suggestion could perhaps make people's job harder or longer (or not), but it could be a neat idea if along with adding the project to the studio, the people who add it could give little quick suggestions on how the project could be improved, and suggestions to make it better.

Thanks for the feedback! We had a suggestion similar to this a while ago, and this is what we agreed upon in the SDS Forum. (This was talking about focusing on cloning on a theme):

“Thanks for sharing this. We've thought about that in the past (and actually have done it in the past! )but decided it wasn't super inviting as a prompt. If someone doesn't understand cloning then the prompt feels very uninviting and not for them. This becomes especially true for new Scratchers who are less familiar with Scratch. Whereas having a theme like “restaurant” or “time travel” can be approached in many different ways and open to people of all different skill levels. And if cloning is really what you want to focus on, I'm sure there are lots of ways to do that within a broader theme of “restaurant” or “time travel” or whatever it may be.

With all that said, I'm not totally opposed to the idea of focusing in on a Scratch feature but I do think a lot of thought would need to go into the planning process and we would need to make sure that whatever we do would feeling welcoming to new users.”

I think that the “project must be interactable” limitation should be removed.

Over the years, I've outgrown this website, so this is a mostly inactive account. I might come back from time to time to mess around, but don't count on it. Bye.

This requirement isn't in all SDS's. It was added for this one to encourage creativity instead of just static images.
