It's not done yet, so could you maybe help out?
Uh, yeah so…
Just ask to help out and say what you'll do an link an example.
People needed:
Music - As much as possible will be custom made
Cardboard Art - Places that look like cardboard.
Scripts - Coding coding and did I mention coding?

Although we are not going to use voice acting(and me and my irl friends will be writing), I could use some help in coding and enemy ideas! I'd also need someone to work on backgrounds.

Ok, do you think you can start working on a battle engine similar to Paper Mario 64's? Just mark the player Scratch and the companion companion. Enemy can be called “Enemy” as a placeholder.

I have experience with a battle system.
I'm very mathematical so I can give you some equations.
However I have my collaborations so I would only to provide equations ie attack and experience.

Does n!+1=m^2 have interger solutions apart from n=4,5,7?

Yeah I have spent a lot of time on that project. However your 3d engine idea scares me a little. I managed to get a 2d engine scrolling and only with @pokepedia11 but a 3d engine hasn't been done before. I'm sorry with my hard approach I'm guessing you want a little help but a 3d approach could lag very hard.
However a paper mario system could be done.
However complicated sprite stretching could be a real problem to achieve a paper mario game because it would use tiles.

Overall it is a massive project. Give me sometime to think about a possible engine please
