Shiny Hunting in Pokémon
What are shiny Pokémon?
A shiny Pokémon is an alternately colored version of that Pokémon. Shiny Pokémon sparkle when entering the battle. Some examples:

Normal Bulbasaur Shiny Normal Charmander Shiny Normal Squirtle Shiny Normal Pikachu Shiny
Somes shinies look similar, but others look drastically different.
Obtaining Shinies
Odds
Shiny Pokémon can be found in the wild with odds of 1/8192 which makes them really rare. From Generation VI (6) onward (starting with X and Y), the odds have been changed to 1/4096 which is better, but still pretty rare. You can encounter shinies at these odds anyway you can encounter Pokémon normally (with an exception of shiny locks, which I'll cover later)
While I prefer to find shinies this way, there are many ways to increase your odds to find them. These are called methods.
Methods
Methods to increase odds and how to use them are as follows:
- Masuda Method
This method involves breeding two Pokémon from different countries. This gives you a chance to hatch eggs with odds as high as 1/512!
- Radar Chaining
This method involves consecutively encountering Pokémon until one is shiny. This gives you odds of up to 1/200 with a chain of 40! This is not to be confused with Dex Chaining
- Shiny Charm
I'm going to consider this a method because it increases your odds quite a bit. You can obtain this by completing the Pokédex. It gives you odds of either 1/4096 (gen 5) or 1/1092 (gens 6-7)
- Friend Safari
This method involves encountering Pokémon in the Friend Safari. It gives you odds of 1/512!
- Chain Fishing
This method involves consecutively encountering Pokémon through fishing encounters. I'm not too certain on the odds, so click the link
- Dex Chaining
This method involves encountering Pokémon using the search function on the dex nav. I'm not too certain on the odds, so click the link.
- SOS Chaining
This method involves encountering Pokémon through SOS encounters. I'm not too certain on the odds, so click the link. (if someone could help me with what to put here, I'd appreciate it.)
- Ultra Warp Ride
This method involves encountering Pokémon through the Ultra Warphole. This gives you odds of 7% or 7/100!
Methods by Game
Most methods are game specific, here's where you can do them:
All Games
From generation four onwards, these can be performed in all main series games
- Masuda Method
From generation five onwards(starting with Black 2 and White 2), these can be performed in all main series games
- Shiny Charm
Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum
These methods can only be preformed in these games
- Radar Chaining
Heart Gold and Soul Silver
These methods can only be preformed in these games
- No new Methods were introduced in these games
Black and White
These methods can only be preformed in these games
- No new Methods were introduced in these games
Black 2 and White 2
These methods can only be preformed in these games
- No new Methods were introduced in these games (that don't apply to any other)
X and Y
These methods can only be preformed in these games
- Radar Chaining
- Chain Fishing
- Friend Safari
Omega Ruby and Alpha Saphire
These methods can only be preformed in these games
- Chain Fishing
- Dex Chaining
Sun and Moon
These methods can only be preformed in these games
- SOS Chaining
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
These methods can only be preformed in these games
- SOS Chaining
- Ultra Warp Ride
Terminology
Abbreviations:
RE - random encounters (say running around in grass)
SR - soft reset (restarting your game quickly using A+B+START+SELECT on Gameboys, L+R+START+SELECT on DSs, or L+R+START/SELECT on 3DS/2DS)
more coming soon
Here's a place to discuss all that! Have any hunts you're currently working on?
Also, did I miss anything, or is something incorrect? Or is this topic missing something? Please let me know :)

From the ultra warp I have gotten 4 shinys so far, and two of them were two encounters from each other.
I find radar chaining kind of hard. I think my longest chain is 14ish? However I have gotten a shiny at a chain of two before.
I like chain fishing. I currently have an Octillery, Remoaid and Poilwag from it.

Remember once when I was playing Pokemon Y, I ran into a shiny Caterpie in Santalune Forest.
Then I caught it, proceeded to nickname it “Bling” and never use it ever.

And all the world over, each nation's the same,
They've simply no notion of playing the game.
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won,
And they practice beforehand, which ruins the fun!

I did this once a long time ago. After like 490 encounters, I caught like a yellow crab (no clue what it's called it's been awhile)
Throws up the deuces and walks out like a G

Ultra Warp Ride's odds are around that of 7% which is absolutely stupid but whatever.
I shiny hunted in Pokémon Sun and managed to get around 10 Pokémon, but back when I hunted in Alpha Sapphire I got around 76

Thank you. I don't think it'll take that long. I'm using the game corner in HG/SS, so I can see five at once. That means I've only had to do 400 resets so far. I did only about 150ish todaygood luck!! i've never seen a shiny porygon2000 seen now. It's really fast to encounter, but I hope I don't go over odds currently 1600 Es into a hunt for Porygon
