ElementNetwork - A block-based front-end web editor/Scratch Mod

ElementNetwork

I have decided to finally create a topic for my project on GitHub called ElementNetwork. It's essentially a mod/rewrite of Scratch. designed for web languages.

People we're looking for…
  • HTML/CSS experience
  • JavaScript (w/ jQuery) for editor
  • Backend Node.JS
Don't have much experience with this type of code?
Here are some things you can still do

Want to join? Just send me your GitHub username!

Basically… Elemental?

TBF Elemental died a long time ago, and I'm willing to remake it. I had a very small hand in developing Elemental (made a few really small fixes/improvements, and some of those improvements broke stuff). Since then, I think I've gotten better in HTML/CSS/JS and Django (for the backend)

BTW my GH username is iamunknown2.

Moving on from Scratch? Learn Python/a scripting language (e.g Perl, JavaScript), then move on to a C derivative

Yeah, after I heard Elemental died, I decided to start trying to re-make it…

Also, this is a chance to use canvas instead of native DOM elements (even though it will be way harder).

I was actually planning on not using canvas…

I was going to probably use SVG for the blocks.

Some ideas for the frontend:
  • Make a class/prototype defining each kind of block (c-block, hat block etc), which also defines local variables for the object such as its location on the canvas, its effect on the HTML (specified with a specific syntax) etc
  • A parser for said syntax to describe a block's effect on the HTML DOM
  • Separation of the block renderer from the detection of clicks and drags
  • A slightly different UI for CSS editing (I will elaborate below)
I have an idea for the CSS editor - instead of being exactly like the HTML editor (but with CSS instead), it would be cool if we integrated it with the HTML editor (other than having it split-screen). For example, to write a selector, you could perhaps click on an “attribute selector” button in the CSS tab, then click on the specific properties in the HTML you want in your selector. We could also implement a way to show which HTML elements are being targeted by specific selectors.

We could also make the user select the elements that they want to apply it to, and then automatically apply a class to those elements.

We could make something similar to Scratch's “show broadcasters” / “show receivers” for broadcasts, and have it highlight the files, blocks, and elements in the preview that are affected.

Are these actual screenshots? Or just concept art? When i try to load the editor it just gives a green background and some text at the top.

Yep, because Elemental is pretty much dead, I got inspired by it to make my own re-make.
Currently there is no code for the rendering of the editor, so it's just menus and a background.

I can do graphics (Inkscape, Photoshop, and Gimp) and front-end HTML and CSS, if you would like help.

OK! So what are the plans for the design?

IDK why I typed this whole idea out in so much detail, but here it is. A lot of js stuff could be described in Scratch-like blocks. You could divide things up into categories something like this:

Basically the current Control/Operators/Data/More Blocks categories would cover most of the raw scripting functionality

Here's the tough one: a category with selectors to get different dom elements. I was thinking a new reporter shape that represents an array of elements, and only fits into inputs that expect an element. Maybe something like this (where curly brackets represent the new reporter shape):
  • {elements with tag [a]}
  • {element (1) of {}}
  • {elements with {} and {}}

A category for manipulating the dom once you have an element selected. like this:
  • (text inside {})
  • Set [background v] of {} to [red]

Events, which would be hat blocks that map directly to event listeners:
  • When website starts
  • When {} clicked
