Why couldn't it be like this: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/4421/ I mean that a user that gives a link to an inappropriate website gets an alert or a ban?

isOnline is an extension that was used by over 2,500 scratchers. With iO, you can know if your friends are online or offline, get access to more emojis and more! Before, if you advertised isOnline in Scratch, you would be rewarded with a crown next your profile which would be visible among other iO users. But due to the new policy, since no one is able advertise, everyone lost there crowns.

@ceebee, I respectfully disagree with the new policy. From your point of view, I can see that you just want to keep Scratchers safe. I totally get that, but as far as I know, there has been no instances where isOnline or other popular extensions tried to steal user information. If you ban the advertisement of extensions, which to me is banning extensions itself, is making the community more uninformed. Kids should be taught about internet safety, and how to take advantage of the various aspects of the internet - such as extensions. So instead of just banning something, why don't we educate others about internet safety and how to use extensions?

It is like forcing people to stay home because the real world is dangerous. Instead of just keeping them home, why don't we teach them how to survive in the real world rather than hide from it?

Hi everyone,

We want to announce today that we’re shifting our policy related to browser extensions, userscripts, and other similar external software. We’ve decided that, for safety reasons, we are no longer going to allow these to be advertised on Scratch.

Browser-based extensions and userscripts can be risky because they can get access to everything you do online. This means that they could potentially get information about the websites you visit, collect private information about you, and change what you see in ways you don’t expect. In the past, we have allowed these to be advertised on Scratch because they can also be fun, safe, and helpful tools – and because we’ve seen that Scratchers can learn a lot by making them. But we feel the risks and potential harm outweigh these benefits.

Because of this, we will now be removing comments, projects, forum posts, user profile information, or other content that reference any browser extension or userscript. In general, we encourage you to use these tools only if they were created by people or organizations you trust.

Thanks,
Scratch Team

SERIOUSLY!? That is the weirdest thing I have ever heard. I do get that you are trying to protect people from downloading the wrong things but I dont get why we cant advertise them! Parents are suppose to be the ones teaching there kids not to download untrustworthy things, NOT YOU. Please dont be offended be this…

This was probably done by mistake. Just send a message to Contact Us about it and we'll take a look
Same… at least mine didn’t have a lot of effort. (on my main account)

Good thing I can keep IsOnline.

when green flag clicked
switch costume to [YEE v]
go to x: (0) y: (0)
show
forever
set volume to (9000) %
play sound [HOORAY! v] until done
end

[scratchblocks]
when green flag clicked
forever
say [HOORAY!]

end

Well, first of all, I don't think you really read the post if you don't understand why… I do think that instead of not allowing advertising of extensions, maybe teach people about internet safety?
