Cheapest hardware for building robot

I would like to start a robot project with my teens.
MBot and GoPiGO are very interesting, but they are not cheap.
Could you help me build something similar for less ?

I have a few Raspberry PI available at home if it helps.
Scratch language is a must for my project.
What controller board would you suggest for me ? (It can be compatible with a Pi, but it’s not mandatory)

The Pi Explorer pHat or Explorer Hat Pro seemed interesting, but I read that a few peoples are unable to make it work with scratch.
Is it true ? Is there a compatibility issue ?

Thanks for your help

I suggest looking into Arduino robotics kits. Fairly cheap and easy to set up and code, around $40-$80 depending on what you get.

If you already have a raspberry pi. Here is the quick robotic kit I purchased to get started on them:

-Pi (you have it already)
-motor driver (I got a 5 pack of L298N MOTOR DRIVER for 15 bucks on amazon, shop around, they are cheap)
-2 wheel, 2 motor, chassis car, battery pack, kit on amazon (about 13 bucks) (note, battery pack will not power the pi, just the motor driver)
-100 pack of jumper wires male/male, male/female, female/female.
-5v portable cell phone charger to power the pi (here is the model I got, seems to work well. “20000mAh Portable Charger External Battery Pack Dual Port 3A High Capacity Fast Power Bank for Apple iPhone iPad Samsung Galaxy and Other Phones Tablets ExpertPower”

I'm looking at my kit right now and I think that is it. And you can use Scratch to program it all. Have fun!

A very good value for money kit is

My ScratchGPIO software can interface with it (and it also supports a lot of other robots/controller boards inc the ExplorerHAT)

Hey vlaine!

If you want to get an impression of what you can do with the Explorer HAT Pro with students (age betweend 12-15), just look up my videos on Youtube!
Im a teacher by myself and I use the ExplorerHAT Pro for my courses! It works! :-)

The projects you can see there are realised after 2 days of coding and practising! Every project is realised with ScratchGPIO8Plus and the ExplorerHATPro!

The language is on german. The students explain what they did on their projects. Just in case you are wondering what they are talking. But for an impression i think it's worth a peak looking up those vids, even you cant understand whats said in there. For more infos, just send me a mail!

greets Felix
