Previous topic

Ludum Dare is a “Game Jam” - a competition wherein contestants make games in a small period of time. Ludum Dare consists of both the “Compo” - a 48-hour jam, and the “Jam” - a 72-hour jam. Every year there is a theme that contestants attempt to base their game off of, which can be interpreted as literally or as metaphorically as is convenient.

The 39th Ludum Dare is happening July 28th - 31st - more specifically, 19:00 UTC on Friday (I think).

Ludum Dare has been hosted on ludumdare.com for a very long time, but since last year it is taking place on a new website - ldjam.com.

Despite the fact that Ludum Dare is a few weeks, the process of theme voting has started! Right now it is in the “Theme Suggestion” round - wherein users submit themes that they would like to see. After the Theme Suggestion round is over, users vote on the themes and the chosen theme is ultimately announced when the competition begins.

It actually isn't officially open, but it can be accessed at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/theme

I have no idea when theme voting begins.

In any case - is anybody participating?

In other news, I've created a userstyle for the ldjam website that makes it look a bit like the old one.

So Ludum Dare is just a competition to create a game in a short period of time. It consists of two separate competitions, one (the ‘compo’) which gives contestants 48 hours to create a game, while the other ('the jam') gives contestants 72 hours. The jam is also more lenient on some rules - while compo contestants have to work alone and create all their assets (except for things like game libraries) inside 48 hours, jam contestants can work on a team and use premade assets.

Both competitions start, I believe, on Friday, July 28th, at 19:00 UTC. At this time, the ‘theme’ is announced, which is meant to be a starting point for coming up with game ideas, and is also something that voters take into account when rating games. So games that use the theme well can get high scores in a rating category based specifically on theme.

After the competition ends, contestants play each others' games and rate them. Rating other games gives your game more visibility, and consequently more ratings, and you will only be included in the final ranking if your game gets at least 20 votes (or maybe the number is 18).

In the coming weeks, contestants are submitting suggestions for themes and then later voting on them to decide what theme will be announced once the competition begins.

Hopefully that's clear enough.

Sadly, I think I won't really be able to participate either - I believe I'm getting back from vacation on that Saturday. But I might spend Sunday making a not-very-serious entry.

Well, right now, the servers are going to be quite slow because of the number of people submitting games / etc, so that could be related..

I also can't seem to submit my game, which is a bit annoying..

So I did end up making a sort-of-game, in the form of a tower defense game. So hooray.

Although I did cheat (so to speak ) and use Unity

One of the many disadvantages to Unity.

I will attempt to do a web build / linux build at somepoint, as well as Android maybe.

EDIT: Looks like I can't build to Linux for some reason?
EDIT2: Oh it's an installation thing
EDIT3: Web build complete! here although it seems like panning isn't working for some reason..
EDIT4: Will probably do a Linux build tomorrow, and also maybe fix the web build.

(sorry for all the bumping)

I've uploaded a Linux build (untested) and it appears that the web version magically started working. So hopefully everybody can play now.

This is my game: https://github.com/TheAspiringHacker/ld39 https://theaspiringhacker.github.io/ld39

Do you know how to filter games by platform? I need to give feedback to other games so others will give me feedback, but I can't play many of the games because they are only available for Windows.
