"FE/NFE" Search Filters

So certain words and phrases are blocked from the Search and Explore. Same with NFE projects. But what if you could press a button to toggle seeing projects like those in Search?

FAQ:

  • What if users see questionable material?
(Thanks WolfCat67 for answer) Here's an idea to counteract that:
You are NOT allowed to search for NFE projects at first.
You can, however, send a request to your parent's email to ask whether or not you're allowed to view this material. If you're not allowed, then you can't use it and the search bar works the same as normal. If you are allowed, then instead of having the filter, NFE projects will now be able to appear in search results.

  • What if a user fakes been an adult?
Well, what if the option only came after you viewed a certain number of NFE projects? This would show that you are mature even though you are not an adult.

Mmmm… I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Some kids may be tempted to see material that is questionable, or sometimes not allowed by parents.

I didn't consider that. Maybe something with emails….?

That's perfect!

Except if someone puts in their date of birth to make them older… I'm sure that there are some people who do that, even now.

I don't think my answer to the question had anything to do with that.

What I meant was, if they put their date if birth late enough, they would be considered an adult… Therefore they would be able to see this content without having parent consent.
Sorry for the confusion.

Support.

But what if an 8-year-old has his own email account and uses that as his “parent's” email?

I'll suggest an alternative way of doing this:

When you create an account (last time I checked) you need to enter your date of birth. If you are under 13 you need to enter your parent's email address.

How about, if the user is under 13 the parent will be sent an email asking if they want to allow their child to search NFE projects or not. They can still find NFE projects without using the search bar. The option can be changed later with another email.

I think a request to the parent would probably not work well because the parent could end up getting spammed with Scratch emails and want to discontinue allowing their child to use Scratch.

I fully support removing the filter that blocks certain words/phrases like “first person shooter” and “call of duty” from showing up, though. If related content is inappropriate it should be reported instead of hiding all related results at the expense of appropriate results. (It's perfectly possible to make an FPS game that's not NFE and is appropriate for Scratch)

Sorry if I wasn't too clear in my initial idea, but I meant that it'd be a one-time request.

I don't even see how NFE needs to exist - or at least why it should be blocked on the search.

Example:
Imagine there's a game called ‘Death Gory Fun Time’, featuring extremely graphic material.

It gets NFE'd very fast automatically, and noone sees it as a result. However, the project is completely inappropriate for Scratch - and thus the proper course of action would be to remove it and not NFE it.

Now then, let's look at ‘Happy Land goes Mad’, a hypothetical borderline FE/NFE game.

It gets NFE'd by the ST after a few views and is never seen by many more people. However, the project is completely appropriate for Scratch, and so why suppress it? It just creates a sort of caste system of projects, with FE being ‘better’ than NFE. However, both are completely valid areas for a project to exist, and therefore are both acceptable for the site.

So yes - I support without any sort of guard as NFE really doesn't need to exist anyway. Proof? Go to an FE project. Now, using only links to profile pages, studios, and projects, try to get to an NFE one. It's relatively easy, compared to how hard they make it to get to it via search and so on.

But then this could encourage the Scratch Team to hide NFE projects even more.

No - if they hid it any more it'd be as good as removal. However, as said on several threads like this, the youngest people have registered at age 4, and only .001% have registered at that age. Talk about minority. Anyway, they shouldn't cater to the littlest children but instead the middle range as that's who the site was intended to be geared towards.

Agreed. I think we will all agree hiding projects with minor violence to cater to toddlers wouldn't be a good idea.

Not even just violence - I've seen a project get an NFE for the use of the word ‘darn’ and for a level that looked wrong (verging on inappropriate) on accident. The latter of the two should have been taken down with an explanatory alert, saying backdrop X could be viewed as inappropriate, and requesting a change.

As per your comment on hiding NFE projects, they could overdo it and hide it so the only way to find it is through a link.

It could be found if the user gave a link though. Like in show and tell
