FPS Games In The Search Results

Suggestion: remove the search filter that prevents FPS games showing up.

Currently when you search up “fps” (which stands for first person shooter) “fps games” and similar, no search results come up because the Scratch Team has intentionally made a filter to make sure nothing comes up when you search for these terms.

Presumably this is because the ST considers most FPS games to be inappropriate and doesn't want them to show up. But:

  • There are many FPS games that are not NFE and are appropriate for Scratch. (For example, laser tag or paintball FPS games which are not inappropriate) It could be unfair to have these projects not get seen.

  • A search for “laser tag” practically only returns results for remixes of Griffpatch's 3D Laser Tag.

  • FPS games that are inappropriate will be reported and removed or marked NFE if required, so they won't show up in the search results.
(Presumably FPS games are more likely to be inappropriate? But someone can make an inappropriate AMV and have it in the search results before it is seen by the ST and AMV is not blocked by the filter)

  • Frames per second counters are also called “fps” and aren't getting seen because of this. Most are called “fps counter” not “frames per second counter”

As mentioned above, this precaution is probably because FPS games are more likely to be inappropriate, and inappropriate games could be in the search results before being reported and removed, but any type of project such as an AMV can be inappropriate and “AMV” isn't blocked by the search and if the project is inappropriate for the search results it will be removed or marked NFE.

Inappropriate FPS games should be removed by the ST and the appropriate ones (e.g. laser tag) should still be allowed to show up in the search results. Laser Tag or paintball isn't inappropriate.

(I know there is a filter, I asked a Scratch Team member)

I support this, but I recommend actually finding out/sourcing the fact that there is a filter.

Support. This would be nice and allow people to see all that scratch has to offer

I really don't think the search term should be censored. FPS can also stand for frames per second.

Support for all reasons mentioned. I can confirm that nothing appears when you search fps.

Yep, it is deliberate by the ST

I made a similar topic that would let you search for FPS games with restrictions.

I still think it would be better without loads of “handicaps” in place though.

*Spits out drink*

I knew scratch had a semi-strict “What is allowed and is not” system but doing that is… i cant even describe that.

Scratch is for people who are starting out programming to make anything (that is appropriate) and share it to the world… BUT NOPE , Scratch is breaking their own rule!
Share.
You are free to remix projects, ideas, images, or anything else you find on Scratch – and anyone can use anything that you share. Be sure to give credit when you remix.

So the FPS idea you can remix and make it your own (while giving credit) but the system blocks it out, so you cant easily access it.

Projects can be marked NFE if the Scratch Team considers them to be quite violent or have mild language, but are not bad enough to be removed.
NFE projects are hidden from the search results.

So as per your statement, the Scratch Team can hide results if they think they are mildly inappropriate.

So essentially the Scratch Team is presuming that ALL FPS games should be NFE, but it's perfectly possible to make a non-graphic FPS game, or a laser tag/paintball game, which would be fine and not NFE.

Or a Frames Per Second engine.

That's right, although it doesn't mean FPS games are inappropriate.

Bumping after a while. I think it's best to not presume all FPS games are inappropriate.
