chess.coms analysis:

Hmm… odd limits even code‍ tag does not work

Thank you! Strange, I could not reproduce GoK's mistakes. On TurboWarp moves 6 and 9 are discarded after 1.2 resp. 0.3 seconds. How fast is your system?

ASUS VivoBook 14 intel core i3

It would be great if you could import the following two FENs (playing white on TurboWarp / Difficult), then press ‘l’, right-click, export and paste the log data into a reply.

rnbq1rk1/ppp1ppbp/5np1/3p4/2PP4/2N2NP1/PP2PPBP/R1BQK2R b KQ - 0 6

Which search depth do you reach (press ‘d’ for debug info)?

According to your PGN data, GoK played Bf5 during the original game. That's 0330, which is found at 0.07 and discarded at 0.37 according to your logfile when re-importing the board. I wonder what was different before? Did you really have Standard / Difficult on during the original game?

Same for rn1q1rk1/p3ppbp/2p2np1/5b2/3P4/2N2NP1/PP2PPBP/R1BQ1RK1 b - - 1 9:
According to your PGN data, GoK played Ng4 originally. That's 2239, which was now found at 0.06 and discarded at 0.27.

I cannot reproduce the blunder at 8. Bf4d6. It is discarded on TurboWarp / Difficult after 6.7 seconds on my system (average notebook), so this is about system speed and search depth. But I agree GoK's game is not great after that either.

I cannot reproduce the blunder at 8. Bf4d6. It is discarded on TurboWarp / Difficult after 6.7 seconds on my system (average notebook), so this is about system speed search depth. But I agree GoK's game is not great after that either.

Indeed, GoK hesitates for a long time between Bd6 (2745) or a3(1824). When I play the game again, GoK moves a3. And then of course you get a completely different game

Arno,

There is a small error in the text on this site at - BoardEvaluation -.

https://coderdojo-linz.github.io/uebungsanleitungen/programmieren/scratch/en/chess/

Having one pawn and one tower more than the other side results in a board evaluation of 900 + 500 = 1400. Thus, we can search for moves that promise the best board evaluation, and discard others.

By the way, nice explanation

Thank you, should be fixed soon.

For the record Arno, this error has still not been corrected. ;-)

I have submitted a pull request on github and it has been approved and merged. However it seems the website has not been built / released since then, which is not within my control.

Thanks! Please always submit raw PGN data format, otherwise I cannot import it to lichess. I could reproduce half of the mistakes GoK did, the other ones not, as I was on a fast system with slightly better search depth. About running out of TurboWarp memory, this can happen on Difficult when you don't have too much physical memory (transposition table might grow a lot there). One workaround is to switch to Medium. Not much we can do in project code.

So i tried making GoK play with Stockfish in the playground
GoK decided to rage quit and crash the page

Not much we can do in project code.
on move 18. GoK chose Qh6?? i don't know if it was a bit flip or not.. since a second before GoK made the move. he chose Qh7?!

On my system and 20sec think time GoK play Qh7, on 40sec think time (press ‘c’) it goes for Be2, which is the correct move.

As mentioned, if GoK is playing white here, this must have been on Junior mode (Easy or Medium).

Scratch Chess Engine - Game of Kings

ArnoHu wrote:

The original idea behind this project was to build a simple chess game for a local kids programming club, and to create a tutorial about chess programming. The Scratch community then picked it up and provided additional ideas and feature requests, so the project kept on expanding in scope.

Today Chess - Game of Kings has three difficulty levels, and displays the progress of the current move calculation. Its move evaluation is based on board material, figure position, mobility and special endgame handling. It allows to take back moves, record games in algebraic notation, and to export or import boards. Of course the program supports all common chess rules, including pawn promotion, castling and en-passant, and has a small opening book included. Game experience / usability was another particular focus point.

Internally it uses a minimax / alpha-beta-pruning approach (usually ply 4 to 6, but up to ply 15 in endgame and on fast runtimes), with quiescence search and iterative deepening.

Maybe you want to give it a try at https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/148769358/. Feedback is very welcome, e.g. via project comments. Thank you!

very nice I love chess I mostly play standard or chess 960

Arno, this result is very satisfying. Was this Stockfish 14.1 ? The Elo rating of levels 3 and 5 is unknown to me. 1500 and 1700 ?

Level 5 has lichess score of 2000, that's probably 1700 ELO. Level 3 has 1400 on lichess, should be around 1100 ELO. At least that is what I read in another posting, that the delta is about 300. Level 3 seemed to play better than 1100 ELO though, with the exception of one big blunder.
