Dungeons and Dragons

As far as I can discern, there is no topic yet existing about this wonderful RPG, so I decided to make one! For those of you who don't know, dungeons and dragons is a game you can play with nothing but a pen, paper, some cool looking dice, and your imagination (plus about 150 bucks worth of books.) They sell tiles and game pieces as well to help everyone keep track of where they are, but personally I prefer playing the old fashioned way. I am currently a dungeon master playing in a group with my girlfriend and a few other nerds from school, and it's a ton of fun! Discuss your favorite experiences, characters, or anything related to the game here.

Hi, glad to see that there are more role-players here! I already made a topic on role-playing games in general here at http://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/20099/, if you're interested.
Anyways, I was just wondering what edition you guys are playing. It sounds like 4th, but one can never be sure.

I love D&D! I wish I had the chance to play it more often. There aren't enough people who want to play it with me, and I forget the rules due to how few times I've actually played it.

I ended up making up my own character: a female elf with an entire backstory to her and everything. I can't wait for the chance to play as her!

find some friends (dnd is best played in a group of 6; one dungeon master and five characters,) go to your local bookseller, and pick up the following items (this is for the 4th edition):
a player's handbook (it's convinient for everyone to have one but you can share)
a dungeon master guide and monster manual (for the dungeon master)
a good set of dice (I would reccomend 3 or 4 of each dice, more if you're the dungeon master)
a set of figurines and some graph paper or, if you're feeling fancy, some official dungeon tiles (these aren't required but it helps a lot to be able to visualize where everyone is, I highly reccomend it)
Just start reading the books, and it explains the whole thing pretty well.

My dad has so much D&D stuff that it's not even funny. We used to play all the time, but it takes sooo long and we stopped playing pretty much. (I was little when I played so I didn't have to do much homework and stuff) I wish they had an online game of it because that would be awesome.

They do have it online, actually. The pencil and paper version is more fun, though.

Yea, I think I remember seeing it online but I didn't remember if it was D&D or not. But the pen and paper version is a lot more fun.

I started playing. I am the automaton Dark Surge Destroyer, whose affinity is darkness and is a mechanist. So far, I have a leather glove, leather robe, 400 guil, and cruddy stats (until I start using my XP in a place I can concentrate… XD).

A much easier option is something like Basic Fantasy or Labyrinth Lord, where you only need one book, some dice, paper, and pencil.

There actually an iPhone app you can get (I'm p sure it's free, I don't remember) that lets you roll all the way up to a d20. It has a number pad on the side, too, so that you can enter the number of times you want the die to be rolled without having to roll it over and over again.

I'm in a club at my school, with all of my friends. I'm an elven sorcerer named Pearl Ilphukïr(means Gemblossom in Elvish), who is 6th level.

I was thinking of making this but I'm glad it exists.

Does anyone know if the adventure that comes with the 5e Essentials kit is any good? I've heard praise for the Lost Mines adventure that came with the starter set

I used to play almost every day but our DM got bored and my guild stopped meeting.
Nothing is worse than a flaky DM…

me and my friends have always wanted to play. I don't think just the three of us would be enough.
I can't seem to find any handbook
