why do giga & nano have their eyes closed?

They're probably not closing their eyes, it may have been what their eyes look like.

This is a common drawing technique for drawing very simple eyelids.

Most cartoons draw characters with their eyes like this when their eyes are closed but they're extra happy, usually their eyes are closed BECAUSE they're so happy. Don't ask me why, because I have no idea! It's just the way things are drawn.

Yes, it's probably intended to make them look happy; and the most likely reason why they are designed to look happy is because the Scratch Team wanted Scratch to look warming to new users.

Giga's eyes in the 404 were opened. But Nano's eyes. oh i dont know but i guess its not as cold as Giga's attitude.

Actually, try smiling like

with your mouth open. Your eyes will naturally look like that of Giga and Nano (well, sort of). If we actually drew the eyes like it looks on us, it looks really weird. (Trust me, I've tried that before. It doesn't work.)
