Welcome to the Osomatsu-san and Osomatsu-kun topic! Feel free to discuss anything (within the scratch guidelines of course) Osomatsu-san or Osomatsu-kun related!

(I'm kinda surprised that there wasn't already a topic for this show, I mean, it seems to be really popular right now)

I've only seen one episode for this show, and I don't get the show or why it's so popular.

Of course, I shouldn't judge a show off one episode but I really didn't get what was going on.

The first episode, is very… how should I put it.
Strange. I can't say that it gets much less strange, either.

I got into Osomatsu-kun recently. I love the 80s anime and Iyami is fantastic.

I am but a simple cartooning reindeer who loves Fujio Akatsuka.

The 60s anime of kun is alright, but it's more dull compared to the 80s one. The 60s one has the absolute cutest ending theme though. The 80s version is for Iyami fans like me because he was pretty much the protagonist in that version (he was the most popular during the time). The 80s anime is very vibrant and nostalgic. It's a lot like a Saturday morning cartoon with the grainy 80s animation, cartoony music, and funny gags. I'd recommend the 80s incarnation a lot.

I've only seen San so far, I plan to watch 80's Kun at some point. My opinion on the whole show is that the episodes from 2015 are all hilarious (excluding the clipshow which I didn't watch because it's a darned clipshow), then all of the 2016 episodes are rather mixed in laughs (emphasis on “mixed” when Girlymatsu-san kicks in, URRRGH).
I enjoy (and in many cases, much prefer) all of the episodes and segments that either focus on more characters than just the brothers (e.g. Iyami, Totoko, Dayon and Dekapan, and Hatabou on that one occasion) or have more elements than just its brand-name “stupid humour” bits that it often pulls off wrong without realizing. There are a lot of episodes that just focus on the brothers exclusively and have the typical gags and it makes it a complete chore at times when you're stuck without variety.
Favourite episodes are probably 3 (which was the only one to have a sketch-show style as far as I'm aware, I wonder why they didn't use that for any other episodes), the Christmas special and 24.
As for favourite brother, it's always been Ichimatsu because he was the first one I could tell apart from the others. (My major concern with watching the show at first was that they looked way too similar.) I'm also growing some appreciation for Jyushi and maybe Kara.

Mm, I think I get what you're saying. I, for one, really enjoy the silliness. I didn't really like Girlymatsu at first, but I could see some of the humour in it later on, definitely. Obviously, it's not going to work for everyone, but in my case, I really enjoyed all of the episodes. I cried at episode 24, though.
And as for favourite brothers, I'd have to agree with you. Jyushi, Kara and Ichi are definitely in my top rankings, at least.

Yeah, I found the Girlymatsu bits got slightly better as they went on. The first one was painful (and the others are as well, to some extent), but the potential for some good humour from such a forced concept found itself eventually. I would just much rather there was some more Period Drama Osomatsu-san.

The first one was a little cringey, I can agree with that, seeing as the way they introduced themseleves was kinda,,, um,,, cringe??? But it definitely got better.

I've heard that all of the side characters (and I literally mean all, as in everyone besides the sextuplets) get demoted to extras in -san. Is that true? I've heard that innocent kid Hatabou does some horrible stuff in -san, and it makes me think it tarnished the mangaka's vision kind of. After I watch it, I will give a full comparison review here.

To be honest, he wasn't horrible really! Not in my opinion. He did some drastic things, but that doesn't make him a bad person! And I'm not sure? I should check on that.

No, what I mean is I love Hatabou's -kun character, and I haven't seen -san. I have no opinion on Hatabou's -san character since I haven't watched it yet. I've just heard that he's done some (unspecified) bad stuff in -san. All he really does in kun is say “I'm Hatabou!” and have a little childish man-crush on Chibita, and be an all-around sweet kid.

They're all super great! Why do you love Iyami so much? XD
Trust me, you'll fall in love with him when you watch the 80s series. He's really funny and for some reason I find him really cute. He's just an interesting and unique character. Halfway through the original manga, the focus changed from the sextuplets to him because that's how popular he was.

Those are all really neat!! I find Iyami kinda hard to like bc ive only watched -san, but ill be sure to check -kun out too!
On tumblr, there's a zine for fans of Karamatsu (karamatsu is very,,,, unique, in -san, they all are), and I made a piece for that,, i do quite a lot of -san drawings.

I've heard his -San incarnation is very narcissistic and egocentric so I can understand why you don't like a character like that. In -kun, he's more of a goofy conman who just wants profits and ends up being more of a victim than those he's swindling.
