I just wanted to leave this here
I just saw that when browsing the Advanced Offtopics! I also saw a Scratcher make surprisingly hateful posts there yesterday.
EDIT: I also posted this an hour or so before I saw that news article.

The entire article where this came from is complete trash, but I'm wondering if this claim is legit. Tens of thousands of claims seems a bit much but considering that it's the music industry it could be true. ST?

And I thought I was ridiculous for thinking that piracy issues could start on scratch.

Huh, I was thinking when this would eventually happen.
Technically, Scratch projects fall under the category of fair use…
But that should only be if you're making an animation and/or game and using the songs as background music.
However, a lot of “tribute” projects are coming up where people basically just post music with a static picture.
Yeah… that kinda blurs the line, doesn't it?
A lot of us know the audio quality in Scratch is bad, but did you know it was made that way intentionally?
Besides the obvious reason to save space on the server, it's also so people don't use Scratch to pirate music.
No, seriously. Don't just take the words of me, take it from Scratch Team member Paddle2See:

I wonder if this is another reason FNAF was more or less banned? People were making copies of the game, meaning it was possible for someone to play FNAF without buying it… that goes for any game, really. But then at least they put in the effort of making the game, instead of just putting an audio file onto a Scratch project with some picture they didn't draw.
Also my post saying you can use copyrighted stuff if you give credit was on the article, I'm famous now XD

Saw that on the AOT too. Apparently it's probably just clickbait.
If things are linked on to Scratch, they have to follow the CGs, right? The problem is that they publicly ‘name and shame’ with the usernames not censored in the article so it'll be curious to see how the ST would react on this and confirm if the 40,000+ claims of ‘copyright infringements’ are true

Apparently Roblox (you've heard it right) have censored FNAF in the filters due to copyright. I wonder if this is another reason FNAF was more or less banned? That's probably one reason, besides the fact that FNAF is darn scary even for me
It's always been a huge mystery for me why people don't bother to make visualizers in music projects. If you want a simple solution, it's not that hard to run a loudness thing on your computer and store the values in a list. or you could use scratchtools and make an epic visualizer super easily :P

I even made a similar comment to yours saying they should have censored the username.
Also, I like how your signature reacts to this article.

@Mega, it's totally legit. Nearly 40,000 takedown requests.
Well I'm not surprised music is the top-pirated media here. Kids just love to upload their favorite music in mass amounts. Shame the ST doesn't restrict them beyond what's appropriate. What bugs me the most about the community is the sheer amount of reposts people do. Low quality, static reposts are the worst, and the absence of them would probably not affect Scratch at all negatively.
The rules are still very loose on media, basically “anything that is appropriate for all ages”. Maybe it's time the Scratch Team start regulating more content? For instance, they could start cracking down on projects that having nothing more than a static image and one or more copyrighted songs, e.g. “tribute” projects. It seems a lot of the copyright claims are targeted at those.
There is one user on there who I thought shared some good insight:

There's a difference between using a copyrighted song (for example) as the main theme of your game (acceptable for educational purposes), and importing one into Scratch as a music player and then upload it (straight out blant piracy).

Good news everyone! The project that the article linked to is now unshared (the music one)! Now they don't have any proof that the project existed unless they used Phosphorus
Annoyingly, the most recent case links to here but it doesn't have anything infringing in it so I'm not sure how that's not fine. To be fair, the project's actually is great. The ST thankfully didn't take that down.

I commented on the music project saying that it was on a news article, then it got unshared, probably by the fear of the creator. Good news everyone! Also, in the comments, people are creating nasty comments which seem threatening to Scratch.
