Whiskers: Scratch 2.0 for Incompatible Devices

And this is why this project is so important
http://twitter.com/scratch/status/677501577691840516

Reliable T'internet is just not here yet - too many variables (from local LAN faults - ISP - T'internet itself - end service provider faults)

The worst that can happen in a school when running local programs is single faults on individual machines.

Offline Scatch 2 suffers from being based on Air (which isn't stable from one week to another) - Whiskers could be the saviour of Scratch in schools

Whiskers: Scratch 2.0 for Incompatible Devices

Just releasing a new image of development:

Remember… Just click to see a larger version

I've been testing out a new and improved sound editor (and recorder), and I'm halfway through the new image editor (or at least the UI).

This is what it looks like when I'm programming Whiskers:

Good… I'm nearly done. The sound editor is finished, and the image editor is nearly done! Then, I need to add project recording in another update.

Once upon a time…
I was once using scratch 2.0, and my internet connection broke. I lost all my work and I didn't use the offline editor because it was too glitchy. I decided that nobody should be forced to use a very buggy version of Scratch compared to the stable 1.4. I got to work on whiskers.

Here is a demo video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P67v0l5Mhgk

I have added most of the blocks from Scratch 2.0 (except for the days since 2000 block and custom blocks)

Download it here: https://goo.gl/VijH66
A bleeding-edge version (with a .changes file) will be available here: Clicky
Raspberry pi topic is here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=124954
Remember that this is ALPHA software. It is very buggy (if someone can help me with the issues with some buttons not working, I would be grateful)
To enable Dev mode, shift click the edit menu…
My development schedule for the next two months will be available here
Cool! I have a Raspberry Pi! I will try it now.

On a Pi, will it replace Scratch 1.4?

This is not an official Scratch rewrite so it most probably will not replace 1.4. This is just a mod based on the 1.4 version of Scratch planning to be a full rewrite of the current 2.0 version in Squeak, the software Scratch 1.x was made in. This way, OSes that don't support Flash, like the one the Pi uses, can use the 2.0 version.

Yes. Can I use your explanation in the OP?

Dude thats epic! When did u learn to program? I just started about 8 months ago! I know how to hack and stuff but for me it takes a pretty long time, even though i know stuff other ppl dont its still hard. I know how to do it its just to long of a time…. I BET UR PROJECTS R EPIC THO!
Thank you! I'm flattered.I learned to program about a year and a half ago, but it was mostly subconsciously. I would browse topics on the ATs and Stackoverflow while I was bored, and I guess I picked up a few tricks along the way. Still, the only reason this project moves so fast is because I devoted a lot of time to it (>300 hours so far). I'm sure anyone could do this if they had the time. (Also, if you're new to programming, try making a website. It helped me understand a bit of some coding syntaxes, especially JS!)

Ok… I've updated the OP with installation instructions for each OS, as well as a few pointers on how to make mods based on Whiskers and a list of blocks I added.

noticed on spulling mistook

/urs/bin/whiskers instead of /usr/bin/whiskers

And I'd recommend for windows, just renaming your Scratch.image to Whiskers.image and placing it in Scratch 1.4 folder and creating shortcut to it so that “proper” Scratch 1.4 still available

1: Fixed
2: I've noticed that this sometimes brings up an an open file dialog when opening Whiskers. I might need to build a standalone installer. Same thing for mac.

Whiskers: Scratch 2.0 for Incompatible Devices

OK… I've just received my raspberry pi yesterday. It's all set up and I've installed Whiskers. It runs very slow (Especially when I change categories), I think that I might port it to NuScratch sooner than I've expected. For now, though, I need to finish the paint editor (I was waiting for the pi so I could compare the speed differences between the paint editors)
