I'm not actually that surprised, really. Unless she wants to keep her audience as preteen girls throughout her entire life, she has to do something to break away from her reputation as Hannah Montana. You see it all the time where bands will try to distance themselves from a certain song in an attempt to progress professionally. Radiohead's Creep, Oasis's Wonderwall, etc.. If an artist wants to progress, they must first make sure that their name is what's memorable, not one specific time in their career. Of course it's hardly more professional to be remembered as “that creepy VMA twerking lady” but I'm not the one that made that decision.

To be honest, even during the Hannah Montana days, I think she had this sort of unfriendly sass about her that always really bothered me. That's why I'm not all that surprised, I mean I knew it would happen some day.
