Before-You-Create-A-Topic Checklist (PLEASE READ)

Here on the Suggestions forum, we encounter a lot of different things that we just look at and think “This person could have done better.”
Well worry no longer as I am here to make sure your checklist is complete.
Please look at this before creating a topic and look over it multiple times to make sure your thread is in tip-top shape.

======THE CHECKLIST======
1. Did I explain it enough?
Did you explain what your ideas are? Your point of view? Others' point of view? Did you explain this in a way that a New Scratcher would understand? Did you tell exactly what it would do? Did you write a nice, neat paragraph explaining? Did you make an example using scratchblocks? Would the Scratch Team understand it? It all matters about people's perspectives. Make sure you include your ideas because it would be easier for Scratchers to understand. If you put some thought into your idea and really think it through, Scratchers will get a better idea of what it is, which is more likely to make them support. Don't just write a quick, simple sentence like:
Hi I want to add a block that will tell us if the word contains a certain letter.
Please support!
————————————————–
2. What would it do?
Did my ideas make it sound easy to understand? Perhaps tell people to include an example? Would it be worth implementing? Would the Scratch Team like the idea? Think how it would work. Explore the consequences. What would happen if… this happened? Or this? Or this? Dig deeper into your idea and find the good stuff (pros) and the bad stuff (cons), also making sure to share those along with your ideas so you can discuss them.
————————————————-
3. Has this been rejected?
Make sure to read the other stickies as some explain why some suggestions should not be added, or some workarounds to certain suggested blocks. Does my idea fit within the rejected area? Is it related? Is it the same? Does this make sense on why this would be rejected? Do you not understand it? If it's been rejected, then don't suggest it. The Scratch Suggestions forum is welcome to many ideas!
————————————————
4. Has this already been suggested?
Is there a duplicate to the topic? Is it in the directory in the stickies? Can I see it when I scroll through the pages? If it's been suggested, you really shouldn't suggest it again. We can't have 2 people suggesting the same thing because, why have 2 when there already is one?
———————————————–
5. Am I really wanting to support this?
Does my idea make sense to me? Think of number 2. Dig deeper. Am I really willing to post this and support this as the person who created it? Believe it or not, you taking the ownership of your suggestion is really big, because you are the one to enforce people to support your idea, everyone who replies is replying because of YOU, and if your suggestion gets implemented, it's all because of YOU. What if people support? What if people don't support? What if people semi-support? How would you react? If they support, that's them riding along with your idea. If someone doesn't support your idea, that doesn't mean you have to drop all your plans for it. You still have to be willing to discuss in feel positive and proud of your idea, because by thinking of suggestions, you are trying to make Scratch better! If they don't support, you can try to enforce them to support. If they still don't support, then respond politely, like this:
Ok. Thanks for the response!
Not like this:
RUDE IDIOT! YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MY IDEA AND YOU THINK YOU CAN JUST NOT SUPPORT!
When people explain why their opinion is their opinion, read it carefully, and think to yourself, just like number 2. Think “This person is supporting/non-supporting/semi-supporting because…” Make sure to read their thoughts carefully and relate them to your idea. We want Scratch to have brand new ideas from suggestions made by YOU!
———————————————-
Thank you for reading this checklist and make sure its complete. If it is, post your thread. If it isn't, revise your thread using this checklist. We hope your suggestion will become real!
Have a nice day!
Note: If you want me to add or edit something, feel free to tell me in this post!

Before-You-Create-A-Topic Checklist (PLEASE READ)

This is a good idea to have a checklist-type approach to Suggestions! A couple of things to keep in mind though:
  1. Remember that people that make suggestions are taking their own time to put forth ideas that they hope will make Scratch a better place. Let's be encouraging and make it clear that we welcome new ideas and are all interested in improving Scratch. Reading your checklist it kind of came across as a "gauntlet" of barriers that had to be overcome before an idea could be expressed - I'm not sure that's as welcoming as it could be.

  2. Let's also keep in mind that we can only sticky a few topics to the top of the section before it becomes over-crowded and difficult to use. If we are going to add a new sticky, we may have to retire an older one to free up a space. Is there one that is out-of-date or no longer being maintained? Maybe there is a message in one that can be incorporated in the new one you are proposing - perhaps in a better way?

  3. In the “Is it clear enough?” section, it might be good to promote the use of examples. They often help clarify how the idea would work.

  4. I find the “Am I really willing to support this?” section more than a little intimidating. This isn't defending a doctoral thesis here - it's a place to put forth ideas for a better Scratch. I agree that we should try to make sure that the suggestions have some thought put into them - but let's not scare people off. That's how I see it anyway - what do others think?

Scratch Team Member, kayak and pickleball enthusiast, cat caregiver.

This is my forum signature! On a forum post, it is okay for Scratchers to advertise in their forum signature. The signature is the stuff that shows up below the horizontal line on the post. It will show up on every post I make.

Great ideas! Threre are a couple of topics that have been since I first looked at the suggestions forum and I don't think anybody has responded in a long time, such as the Constructive replies or the Scratch Design Goals. I will edit it later, though. How long does it take to update the stickies anyway?
