What does Scratch actually teach?

Hello all,

I am going to be starting a coding club at school. I am new to coding myself. I have run through the stuff on Code.org, and have been building my own games here on Scratch.

My question is, what does Scratch actually teach? I feel like I have learn a lot, at least about scratch, but I don't know exactly how to word what I've learned. I am assuming that it teaches the syntax of programming and also the ability to critically think and use the tools available to you in your toolkit. Am I correct in my statement? Also, does anyone have a suggestion for the next logical step in coding after this? I want to have the students build apps in MiT App Inventor, but what about actual coding languages?

Thank you,
~K
