what is so good about followers?

If they are real followers because they are interested in what you are doing, it is a great way to advertise and get help. When you share something new, they can see it on the front page. They can then look at it and LOVE it, or make suggestions. They can post in in their studios. Their followers see that they loved it and so on and so forth.

If it is just people seeing how many followers they can't get, I see no value except ego boost.

Followers are People who are interested in your stuff. they can see what you did last in the What's Happening box at the front page. So they can see what Projects you loved or favourited last or if you've shared a Project.
