This has evolved from a little game to a full scale Starbucks partnership
My concerns (greatest to least):
  • Would Starbucks be angry that I am using their restaurants as an element in my game? Am I allowed to feature the Starbucks name or logo?
  • What about users in places where there are only 2 Starbucks in their area, but tons of players? It seems like it wouldn't be fair
  • Would it be controversial to include the phrase “appease the coffee gods” in the game?
  • I think you are, as long as you don't say that Starbucks is something else, you're OK. On the other hand, you may get into a bit of trouble if you use their logo.
  • Remember what I said about the army-moving feature?
  • I don't think so (Infinity Blade, for example), but I know 3 people (including myself) in this thread that would like you to change it to something less “religious”. Coffee Lords would be nice as well.

So… What do you think, ChocolatePi?

Also, I have another idea for gaining caffeine: You get a 10-coffee-bean army the first time you go to a Starbucks location after you've downloaded the app.

I wouldn't do anything related to this because you want to make a web app, not a mobile app. The Starbucks thing is better as a mobile app unless you bring a laptop everywhere you go.

That's why I'm hesitant.
These are all great ideas, but I really don't want to make a game

A trail mapping thing would be pretty cool - can track how far you go on each trail, which trails you want to go on, etc.

But Starbucks has free Wi-Fi! Who wouldn't bring a laptop?

I had an idea for a browser extension, but that's not a web app

considered harmful

Honestly I don't think a map would be very exciting.

1st, It's pretty difficult to compete with Google Maps. I wouldn't be surprised if Google already has ChocolatePi's area mapped out.
2nd, I'm not sure about others, but usually I only read bulletins when I'm bored. I don't think a map web application would be interesting enough for me to visit a website for.
3rd, You'd probably have to do a lot of hiking / biking if you wanted to make this. Otherwise you're probably going to have lots of gaps in your data.
4th, your web app would only be useful to people in a specific region.

Personally, I think this would be a lot of work for little payoff. Consider it this way:

–> in one month, 1000 people read the bulletin. (not sure how accurate this is)
–> out of those 1000, 700 of them see your ad for your website app.
–> out of those 700, 200 actually visit your website.
–> out of those 200, 10 of them click on the ads.
–> in one month, you make 1 cent.

Obviously that might be a bit exaggerated, but still. A map app probably is not going to make you very much money. You'd probably have better luck making coffee related games as phone apps.

(this was a reply to Firedrake but it's mostly directed toward ChocolatePi, lol… :P)

By “trail mapping”, I mean using Google Maps' API to get the maps, and then allow users to register and keep track of their trail mileage, stats, wishlist, etc. Not map out the area to create a map by any means xD

For some of us, it's not all about money - it's about learning and being able to create something practical with that knowledge, which (I think) is ChocolatePi's goal. Also, he wants to do a web app, not a mobile app. Learning, not making money (yet, because you definitely can make money on web apps, especially when making an app for both web and mobile. more on that later if he goes through with an idea)

I feel like I wanted to do something with trails in the first place, so I think I'm going to make a trails tracking webapp where you can share what trails you have went on on Facebook and stuff.

Firedrake:

I am doing this to learn about web development, but if it progresses over time, I'd also like to make a few bucks in it as well. But my main purpose is to learn and make stuff

Also, is it possible to track what trails people go on? Or would I have to ask users what trails they go on?
Also also, if people are in places where I'm not recording trails (places where I don't live (places other than my town )), could I prompt them to add their own? How would that work?

Tracking which trails they run on would be difficult. Instead, why not make a site where people can submit paths they like to take for walking/biking/running/whatever? Then, let people rate the trail out of 5 stars and give users reccomendations of what path they should take based on the distance they want to go, how hilly it should be, etc.?

This sounds like a good idea. I told my older sister about it (I had a similar idea before you posted this) and she said there was already something like that. However, she can't exactly be very credible

Another idea I was thinking of doing was a Scratch tutorial site, where people can log in with their Scratch account (or make one on the site) and post tutorials, download sample projects, etc.

Maybe I can do both, or one and then the other later.

Hmm, try making a map application to help people find the nearest Starbucks restaurant near them.
This.

Because you advertised it on Starbucks.
Target market = Starbucks fans.
Oh. I just quoted because I like Starbucks xD
I don't care if the starbucks app does it, you'll do it better
