I've been planning for a long time to make a helpful web app that I could make money off of via ads. As I advance my knowledge in Ruby and Rails, I think I'm ready to attempt this, and if I don't, at least I tried

My town has a lot of trails, and I'm thinking something like a responsive site for looking at them, some maps, and maybe get some local businesses in on it too? It's a start of an idea.

What do you guys think I could make? I'm going to advertise it at the bulletin board at the Starbucks when I'm done, so it's sure to get some visitors

Hmm, try making a map application to help people find the nearest Starbucks restaurant near them.

Because you advertised it on Starbucks.
Target market = Starbucks fans.

Starbucks finder that also functions as a game, where you attempt to conquer Starbucks locations. In the game, you gain caffeine in the Starbucks locations you stay in. Caffeine can be turned into armies of coffee beans that can be moved from location to location (although it takes time). The armies are mainly used as a way to 1) fight other armies at your order, and 2) harvest even more caffeine.

Yes! Starbucks might not like a game where you're conquering their stores though.

Edit: You could add other franchises like Dunkin Donuts, at the beginning of a game you pick one and a starting location, and you have to defend your stores from the other chains and conquer their stores.

Hey, Google's done it before with Ingress, and all the subjects of the capture points aren't complaining!

On the other hand, this may end up in Starbucks complaining about people sitting at their mobile phones, hogging the restaurants.

Or maybe you could somehow attach the caffeine earning system to actually buying coffee instead, which could result in more sales!

Well in that case it could be done Candy Crush style!

@ChocolatePi you could include little 10 digit codes that give you boosters or help you ingame, or maybe unlock things for you. Then they could put them on the back of the coffee cups McDonalds Monopoly style.

You'd have to keep track of the codes people have entered within the phone though to stop them from reentering the same code a billion times. xD

I would prefer for the codes to be the only source for the caffeine.

And for that to work, Starbucks would have to get involved.

This has evolved from a little game to a full scale Starbucks partnership
My concerns (greatest to least):
  • Would Starbucks be angry that I am using their restaurants as an element in my game? Am I allowed to feature the Starbucks name or logo?
  • What about users in places where there are only 2 Starbucks in their area, but tons of players? It seems like it wouldn't be fair
  • Would it be controversial to include the phrase “appease the coffee gods” in the game?

AND WOULD EVERYONE PLEASE LOOK AT THE TITLE!

thank you

I could probably make this as a web app, but it's starting to sound like a mobile app and I would not want it to turn in that direction (unless you think it's a better platform )
