Possible Solutions for the Problem of "ADD EVERYTHING" Studios

I think the best solution is Lightnin's idea to add a flood limit (as in you can only upload x number of projects in x number of days) plus #2 and #6. This would slow add everything studios and restore the purpose of studios, but not affect anyone else.

Well, then, what are we doing still discussing it? The flood limit has to be implemented and the situation finalized!

Possible Solutions for the Problem of "ADD EVERYTHING" Studios

I think the main solution is for everyone to relax. Remember - it's not ok to be mean or rude - so if you see comments or projects like that, just report ‘em.

Add everything studios have been around since the beginning of Scratch. Just as spam will be on the internets till the internets are no more, so will add everything studios. Do your best to ignore them, and they will die down.

It’s actually pretty boring making an add everything studio, which is why 99% of the add everything studios ever created have died off and are no longer active. Of course, if tons of people declare war on add everything studios and start flaming them, then it doesn't get boring, it's all exciting and dramatical, so they keep on adding and adding…

Possible Solutions for the Problem of "ADD EVERYTHING" Studios

I don't hate people for making “add everything” studios, but seeing the studios themselves all over the search results page is especially annoying, because most of the time they're on the results page because maybe one or two of the projects in that studio are relevant.
I support making a project cap on studios (1000), letting users remove their own projects, and notifying Scratchers if their project has been adding.
I'm not in (full) support of the other options for the following reasons:
Ban “add everything” studios - If we just use a filter to get rid of “add everything” studios, people will most definitely find a way to bypass this. Without a shadow of a doubt. And making a reporting system- so that the mods have to take the studios down- is a pain in the neck and a ton more work that would be dumped on the mods, especially since they'd probably have to review the studio themselves to make sure it's an “add everything” before deleting it (and they'd probably have to notify everyone involved of its deletion).
Ask Scratcher's Permission to add their projects to a studio - While this is a good idea initially, I think it'd make it more difficult for people who are hosting things such as coloring contests. I have a studio for other peoples' entries to my (as of yet, one and only) coloring contest, and I like being able to easily add an entrant's project to the studio as soon as I see it. Asking for permission suddenly makes it a lot more difficult to organize projects, because it may be days or even weeks until the creator of the project sees the notification and accepts it. Say my coloring contest ends tomorrow, and a Scratcher just posted a last-minute entry. So, I send a request to the Scratcher to add it to the studio. Now, say that this Scratcher had posted the project right before they went on vacation, or were otherwise occupied and couldn't get onto Scratch to accept my studio invitation. I'd probably miss their project when I'm finalizing the results, and they'd be left out of the competition, even though they'd put in just as much effort as the other entrants.
Discourage “add everything” studios - This one I'm not really opposed to; I just think it'd be kinder if we didn't ask the ST to get involved in what they may personally find a trivial issue.
Hide “add everything” studios from the list of studios that a project is in - I can understand the reasoning behind this, but I don't think it will solve very many problems. The projects will still be in the “add everything” studios, and the search results will still contain the projects. Best if we were to remove the project from the studio altogether.
Only allow Scratchers to create Studios - Personally, I think that New Scratchers are limited enough. The main site is where they get the majority of their freedom, and honestly, I think it'd be more of a turn-off to limit them so much, rather than an incentive to become a Scratcher.

TL;DR - I'm in support of the general idea, just not all aspects of it.

why this is a very bad campain

all the numbers are very bad ill count
  1. a project that has a * ton of add everything projects are probly very populer and is sometimes filled with GREAT projects.
    2.
an “add everything” studio is used like a “sprite” gallery. people can check out tons of projects
    3.
they want people to view them.
    4.
    somewhat true,
    5.
the limit will be troblesome for EVERY studio
this is just mi opinion

Agreed.
Add everything studios have been around since the beginning of Scratch. Just as spam will be on the internets till the internets are no more, so will add everything studios. Do your best to ignore them, and they will die down.
Well, only recently have they gained popularity and are really starting to bug people. We were all in perfect harmony until sudden competition swept over new Scratchers, and now hundreds are in a race to get as many followers, love-its, favorites, views, and projects in their studios, which is greatly discouraged by some of the older Scratchers like me.

What I'm trying to say is that we would all like to go back in time to where honor and respect were the motives of Scratch, not fame or bragging rights.

It's actually pretty boring making an add everything studio, which is why 99% of the add everything studios ever created have died off and are no longer active. Boring indeed.

So the master plan is if we leave these studios alone, as in give absolutely no attention whatsoever, they will eventually stop?

No… they'll never stop, as long as Scratch exists. I think what Lightnin's really saying is that there are just more important things in life. Does it really matter that much if on some website out of the millions out there, our projects are linked to some studio which we don't personally like or enjoy?? There are far too much more important matters in life, and if you really think of it, all this flame war and anger is over binary code… People are getting mad over little pixel lights on a screen and “1”'s and “0”'s stored on a machine in Massachusetts thousands of miles away from many. It's just a website… It's not the end of the world, just some people having fun adding our projects. Look at Lighhtnin, and Cheddargirl, and Paddle2See. why are they on the Scratch Team? because they're wise, responsible individuals, and as role models we should realize that since they're not getting angry over the studios, we probably shouldn't either. Maybe studios with an actual theme will lose popularity and get no attention due to add everything studios… But the grass still sways, the wind blows, the water flows, the earth rotates, and so does life go on…

ProdigyZeta7, that response was not particularly aimed towards you, but everyone,

Did you cuss (hence the asterisk)? Please don't.
And it's not a “very bad” campaign. Our purpose is not to hurt people or destroy their studios, but to find ways to limit the things in studios.
It's true that they contain good projects, but people sometimes don't like that. In fact, lots of people complain that they don't want their best project stuffed in a studio without asking. So our best cards to play are:
1. Allow users to remove their projects from studios
2. Cap the limit of projects in a studio. (maybe select the maximum limit from a drop-down selection menu, like 100, 1000, and 10000).

So if you don't agree with the current ideas, you are free to give your idea for a solution.

You know what I really think will stop all this hunger for fame? If there was no number showing people the amount of followers you have.

@turkey3: fine, but you could say the exact same argument about spam comments- it's just a matter of a few pixels, yet spam comments are much more frowned upon.

And I agree that the ST have much more important things to do, did you really think I expected the ST to drop everything just to sort this out? Of course I didn't, in fact it would amaze and even confuse me if they did, comparing this to other things on their to-do list. I've said this at least three times now: all I wanted was to let the ST know that some people do get annoyed about these studios, and to find out if anything was going to be done about them.

And I don't think anyone's getting angry over these studios, some people just think that it would be better if they weren't present.

personally i think this campaign uses more binary than 100 AE studios

P.S. i am in SC

Then don't start a war by posting here. Saying we're terrorizing studios is biased and cruel. A more appropriate term to use would be undermining.

If you don't want a war then why did you declare a “war”?

Asking for my projects to be removed is hardly terrorizing. Fine, maybe some users have taken this too far, but I don't think it's as extreme as you suggest.

The thing is, we need co-operation from the studio owners. Because if we ask for our projects to be removed and you accept, there would be no problem. Unfortunately, many curators of these studios ignore our requests to remove our projects, and it is that that can annoy many people.

Possible Solutions for the Problem of "ADD EVERYTHING" Studios

Lightnin wrote:

Could someone summarize the suggested solutions? The first post is quite a mega wall! Nice that you spent so much energy and effort creating it - but can you maybe make a short version?
Short Version:

Bad things about these studios:
There are over 50,000 add everything studios.
They make it harder to find other studios.
They can bog down the site with their massive project collections.
The people who add projects to the studios don't even look at your hard-worked on projects before adding them to AE studios.
To the curators, all projects are the same.
People make junk projects just to boost their AE numbers.
It's a lot harder to explore studios.

Possible solutions:
Restrict add everything studios and delete the existing ones. This is probably a denied solution.
Notify users when their project is added to a studio: Of course we need this!
Ask someone permission before adding their project to their studio: Maybe.
Let users remove their projects from studios: YES! What if your project ended up in a studio that said that it contained only bad projects?
Discourage add everything studios: Wouldn't work, because mostly new scratchers make these studios.
Hide add everything studios from the list of studios a project is in: <— YES YES YES
Giving studios project limits: Probably not, see paddle2see's explination.
Only allow scratchers to create studios: Probably a good solution. This would rule out about 80% of spam studios.

I did a google advanced search finding pages under the domain scratch.mit.edu/studios, and I got about 213 million studios. Someone else found out that 50 thousand of them are add everything. That means that roughly 0.023% of all studios are add everything. I actually thought it would be 5%.

Possible Solutions for the Problem of "ADD EVERYTHING" Studios

I really love the idea of hiding studios that a project is in, but maybe the studio could be hidden on the project, but in the studio page the project still shows up?

A: Of course, hiding studios that add you (whether it be personal favourite studios or add everything studios) so your viewers can see the studios that matter. But you can still get traffic from those studios that want your project for whatever reason.

B: Some studios may add their projects and they may not be proud of, supportive, or like the relevance of said studio. (for instance, chr:stians unite is alright, but not everyone follows that belief)

C: Some people have friends on scratch and don't want them to see a studio that has an icon for my little pony on the front or something. (Personal reasons, also there is nothing wrong no matter who you are if you like my little pony. )

I mean if they added this alone I would be satisfied, studio approval would be nice too though, especially for popular projects.
