Forum Guide

I've created a guide of Scratch forum basics.

Forum Terminology

  • AT
“AT” stands for “Advanced Topics,” a forum where users can discuss higher-level topics. The Advanced Topics forum has a tight-knit community because less users post there, but the users who do post tend to do so frequently.

  • ATer
An ATer is a user who frequently posts in the Advanced Topics forum.

  • BBCode
BBCode is a language similar to HTML that is used to format posts. You can use it by putting text between [tags][/tags]. You can find a useful guide on BBCode here.

  • Blockspam
It can be fun to play with the [scratchblocks][/scratchblocks] tags! However, your posts should have to do with the topic. Please don't post Scratchblocks on a topic unless it contributes to the discussion. You can test Scratchblocks here.

  • Bump
Have you ever seen people post “Bump” on topics? “Bump” stands for “Bring up my post;” it is used to bring a topic to the top of the list of topics, where more people can see it. “Bump” can also just mean “bump.” Only bump your topics when they are off the first page, but still have had a post recently. If you bump a very old topic, it becomes a “Necro-bump” (see “Necropost”).

  • Close
When a topic is closed, it can no longer be posted on. Users can close their own topics after 24 hours. The Scratch Team also has the power to close topics. They may close topics that don't follow the forum guidelines, are duplicates, or have been necroposted on, among other reasons.

  • Duplicate
A duplicate is a topic that is about the same thing an already existing topic is about. Before creating a new topic, users should check to see if a similar topic already exists. Duplicate topics are closed by the Scratch Team.

  • ITopic
ITopics are topics that provide information. They are very useful guides! Once too many stickies accumulate on a forum, important topics may be made into ITopics instead, and they may be linked to from stickies.

  • Necropost
If the last time a topic is posted on is very old, it should not be posted on, and therefore brought back to the top of the topic list, unless you have very relevant information to post about. Necroposting is allowed in some situations. You can find more information about Necroposts on this topic.

  • Ninja'd
“Ninja'd” is the forum term for when a user finds that another post had been submitted in between the time when they began to write their own post and the time when they submitted it.

  • OP
Short for “Original Post” or “Original Poster,” the term either refers to the first post in a topic or the topic's author.

  • Post
Posts are pieces of writing that can be posted on a topic. They should be relevant to the topic they are posted on.

  • Sticky
Stickies are topics that are permanently at the top of a forum. They contain valuable information and should be read before creating a new topic. They often contain forum rules. DO NOT DISREGARD THE STICKIES. ALWAYS READ THEM.

  • Support
“Support” is a word used on the Suggestions forum. It means the Scratcher would like to see a suggestion accepted by the Scratch Team.

  • Thread
    See “topic.”

  • Topic
Topics, also known as threads, are individual discussions. They consist of one or more posts.

If you see this signature while scrolling, you have been visited by ʎ++ haskal. Lazy evaluation, monads, function purity, lambdas, currying, partial application, algebraic data types, pattern matching, and typeclasses will come to you, but only if you comment, “Thanks, ʎ++ haskal” on my profile.

Are you trying to get ITopic'd? Edited for no more offtopic stuff Ooh, ITopic'd!
I suggest adding the globe because most people in Bugs & Glitches don't actually use the globe so it'll be useful in the guide.
(and if you need a image, I've got one)
(and also, bold the don't disregard stickies, because that's important)

Yeah. I saw a post criticizing the way people say "READ THE STICKY!!!!!eleven!11!11!eleven factorial! whenever someone posts a suggestion that has been rejected. The Scratcher wrote that they would not want someone to jump on them with forum terminology. This inspired me to make a guide so people are more familiar with the rules, and getting it Stickied or Topic'ed would cause more people to see it.

This should be ITopic'd. You are might want to add something on quoting, and maybe a link to other topics at the bottom for help with miscellaneous things (such as the Scratch Blocks Testing Topic and the one about spam).

Speaking about the one about spam, that should be added, along with blockspam and the various types of it (although that might go too far to the other topic)

Okay, I added “Blockspam.” “Spam” is covered in “Post,” though.

True…
Anyways, this guide is probably ready for use now. I can't really suggest anything more to it.
EDIT: Ninja'd while editing my post…

True…
Also, you might add something to prevent duplicates or nercobumps (like checking if a topic is already made, check the last post time etc.)
Those are covered in their respective categories as well…

Meh, I looked at the link and honestly don't think the terminology listed are necessary. Most of them are just text abbreviations, and the other terminology in the list isn't as commonly used (in my experience)… For example, in all my life as a forum browser, I have not seen anyone refer to the Questions About Scratch forum as All About Scratch.

I think it should be called a glossary instead of a dictionary.

Good guide, but you might want to change the bit about “Don't necropost” to mention that necroposting is allowed in some forums (like Suggestions).

I guess this is okay in this forum, but it feels this would be better in New Scratchers. After all, they seem to be the problem here (no offense).
Then I remembered that I don't know the last time I was in that forum.
Then I remembered I didn't even go to that forum in the beginning.
And then I said, “Well. That's not going to help anyone,” and continued on with my day.
