Acctually the “useless button” is useful for extentions, you just have to shift+click!!

There is a lot more space for English maybe, but not for other languages. I already had to change my translations in order to fit everything in - switch to Gàidhlig to see how little space is left. Button texts can become up to 8 times longer when you translate them into other languages (IBM created a statistic on that somewhere).

Maybe the solution for the Search bar would be to have a JavaScript pulldown. This way, the space needed in the header bar would only be the looking glass symbol. Alternatively, one could create a ? symbol for the help link to regain some space for the search bar. Or make the width of the search bar dynamic to fill the remaining space - this would again need to be a JavaScript, I think.

So, it's not as trivial or easy as it sounds
