What are the differences between the editors in Scratch 1.4 and Scratch 2.0?

What are the differences between the editors in Scratch 1.4 and Scratch 2.0? The editor means the scripts area and stage. I do not include website differences, because I don't think many people remember the 1.4 website.

The list:

~1.4 Differences~

-1.4 has a “forever if” block.
-1.4 has a “surprise sprite” button.
-1.4 is offline.
-1.4 has more instruments for Sound blocks.
-1.4 is more stable than 2.0.
-1.4 is capable of using multiple fonts for text.
-1.4 has a different “script cleanup” feature.
-1.4 calls the “Data” section “Variables”
-1.4 has a “loud?” block.
-1.4 has slider blocks.
-1.4 uses the Squeak language.
-1.4 has Squeak morphs.
-1.4 has “Delete a Variable” and “Delete a List” buttons.
-1.4 has a gray background.
-1.4 uses MIDI for sound blocks.
-1.4 has more freedom in the editor.
-1.4 had the ability to change variable colors and share the project.
-1.4 has the ability to debug projects by running it slowly.
-1.4 lets you lock a sprite so it can not be moved in the editor.
-1.4 has single stepping.
-1.4 has Mesh.
-1.4 has Shift-Click R.
-In 1.4, the Event blocks were called Control blocks.
-In 1.4, the sprite can be moved, even if it is locked or not.
-1.4 has the ability to turn a part of the stage or editor into a costume for a sprite or an entirely new sprite.
-1.4 had sprites with pre-added scripts, like “Follow-Mouse Fish” and “Gravity Cat”

~2.0 Differences~

-2.0 has a very different design.
-2.0 has a lot of different sprites and backdrops, and has removed some from 1.4 like Gravity Cat.
-2.0 has clones.
-2.0 has custom blocks and the “More Blocks” section.
-2.0 has the Vector editor.
-2.0 is less stable.
-2.0 is online.
-2.0 has sound editing.
-2.0 has an “Events” category
-2.0 files are more “compressed” than 1.4
-2.0 has a “set rotation style” block.
-2.0 has a “backdrop name” block.
-2.0 has a “when backdrop switches to” Event block.
-2.0 merged “stop all” and “stop script”, and added “stop other scripts in sprite”.
-2.0 has “video” and “username” blocks.
-2.0 has “floor” and “ceiling” options for the “_ of 9” block.
-2.0 has “show list” and “hide list” blocks.
-2.0 has the “current” and “days since 2000”
-2.0 lets you create Javascript extensions.
-2.0 uses ActionScript 3.
-2.0 has Cloud Variables
-2.0 is harder to mod and debug. It requires special software.
-2.0 allows you to change the category colors.
-2.0 has a brighter background.
-2.0 has a different fullscreen mode than 1.4.
-2.0 contains “Run Without Screen Refresh” in custom blocks.
-2.0 can have hacked blocks by editing the JSON code in an external editor.
-2.0 has PicoBoard support.
-2.0 has a help menu.
-2.0 has the backpack.
-In 2.0, the motor blocks are black, compared to dark blue in 1.4.
-2.0 lets you zoom in in the editor.

Do you know any other differences? Post them and I'll add them!

What are the differences between the editors in Scratch 1.4 and Scratch 2.0?

2.0 is buggier, online, and has more features.

1.4 is more stable, offline, and has less features.

1.4 can also be modded without downloading anything other than 1.4 itself. This is not the case for 2.0.

I don't think there's really anything else….

There is.
1.4 has more instruments and you can't make blocks.

If you see this block while scrolling
when Meese123 {say (username::grey) in {[Portuguese v]::hat control}::operators} clicked {<Meese123=awesome::sound>true::cap motion}::hat looks
you have been visited by Sir Programmer VI
the ability to program almost as well as him will come to you
but only if you comment "Moo. I am a banjo playing rhinoceros" on my profile.

Just to add some more differences to the list:
- 1.4 editor uses regular resolution for the bitmap art, whereas 2.0 does not.
- 1.4 is capable of using multiple fonts for text, 2.0 is limited to using the fonts installed for text and requires a workaround to use other fonts
- the scrip cleanup feature in 1.4 and 2.0 work differently
- 1.4 doesn't have sound editing capabilities
- 2.0 project files are more “compressed” than 1.4 files.

It's not an exhaustive list. I would imagine there's more if we put our minds to it.

Isn't “draggable on website” just the same thing as “draggable in player” with a different name. AFAIK it also affected the fullscreen mode of the 1.4 offline editor.

The slider blocks are probably for either the WeDo or the Picoboard, but I'm not sure if 1.4 supported Picoboard.
  • 2.0 gives you the ability to create Javascript extensions.
  • 1.4 uses the Squeak langauge.
  • 2.0 uses Actionscript 3.
  • 2.0 has Cloud Variables (how did you miss that out?)
  • 2.0 is harder to modify and debug. Modification requires additional software in 2.0
  • 1.4 has Squeak morphs available.
  • 2.0 allows you to change the catergory colours
  • 1.4 contains a button in Variables below the “Make a variable” called “Delete a variable”. It is not in 2.0
  • 1.4 contains a sprited grey background and the whole theme was grey (it also had blue for dialogs).
  • 2.0 has a brighter background.
  • 1.4 uses MIDI for the sound blocks (therefore it had more instruments).
  • The 1.4 and 2.0 fullscreens are different.
  • 2.0 contains a “Run Without Screen Refresh” selection in custom blocks.
  • 1.4 has more freedom in the editor.
  • 2.0 can have hacked blocks by editing the JSON code in an external editor.
  • It's possible to change the variable colour in 1.4 and share it.
  • 1.4 has the ability to debug projects easily by running it slowly.
  • 1.4 had the ability to lock a sprite so you couldn't move it in the editor.
I know it's a lot of additions.

I pointed out some of the design differences, not sure how I could forget position UI though.

How about THIS design difference the small screen for 1.4 is on the right while the small screen for 2.0 is on the left

My Artwork!

We never notice all the green around us until the season’s passed.
We never long for the world to slow down until it goes by too fast,
If everything plays a grander part in a fate we’ll never meet,
Is my destiny to fade away, have a goal I’ll never reach?
We never listen for the songs around us the sound is still.
We never see what our life is worth, and perhaps we never will…
If everything plays a grander part in a fate we’ll never meet,
I will not let my days slip away, I will rise up on two feet.
And I’ll be complete.

If I could rewind, change my mind and do it all again
With all the answers ahead of me, and know how it would all end.
Would I make the same choice, like before I knew.
That our destinies were tied, to each other and it was me and you.
One not two

※in 1.4 the sprite can be moved in the editor, regardless of lock or not. The lock actually makes it draggable in the player and fullscreen, and it does the same in 2.0.

Just clarifying.

Specs 1 (main): Safari on MacBook Pro; Late 2008; Core 2 Duo @2.4GHz; 8GB 1067MHz DDR3 RAM; Mac OS X 10.10;

Specs 2: Firefox on Lenovo Yoga 13; Core i7 @2.0GHz; 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM;
tri-boots Windows 10 Pro, Mac OS X 10.10, and Ubuntu 14.01 LTS;

All have the latest version of Flash.
