So I had this urge to make a fun little platformer with neat 8-bit graphics with sprinkles and gingerbread and the like, but now I'm really stuck at what the plotline should be.
Any ideas would be great and if I use your idea I will give you credit for helping.
The atmosphere of the game is pretty positive so a dark storyline or theme may not be the best.

Dr. Black Licorice took over the candy world and sends out his minions, which are the black jellybeans. The 5 stages are, 1) gingerbread land 2) licorice
Lane 3) Peep pond 4) caramel bog 5) Dr black licorice's lab

Okay, so here's what I can come up with:
1. A gingerbread man has lost his pet gingerbread dog, so you have to find him.
2. You're collecting gumdrops for Professor Sweet Tooth so he can create candy people (and you can have alternating characters and such the more you collect. It would be like your trying to build a world or something).
3. The protagonist's neighbor lost his pet Peeps (thanks for reminding me of Peeps, bunnymustard), so you have to go searching for them.
4. Go along the same lines as Candy Land perhaps.

Ok, here's my story which you can use.

In the magical world of Candytopia, everything is made of candy. Even some of the residents! The world replenishes the candy it eats with a magical substance called the Super Sugar (it's sugar, if you were worried it's something else). However, the evil Dark Lord of Licorice steals the Super Sugar to make his licorice taste good. And you, the Marshmallow Adventurer, must go on a perilous journey to fight the Dark Lord of Licorice and return the Super Sugar to Candytopia!

Definitely try to make the game's story a bit more on the non-serious side, or if you do want to make it serious, be ironic about it. You're making a game about sweets jumping over other sweets – have fun with it!

Here's an idea:
The protagonist's dream is to go to the moon (which is actually just a giant marshmallow) and they journey through the gelatin fields, rock candy mountains, cotton candy clouds, and travel through space while avoiding meteorites made of peanut brittle before accomplishing their dream.
This would also make for a unique style of platforming with vertical levels, so it doesn't feel like a copy of most platformers already out there.
