how do people nowadays get nearly 1000 followers w/o even trying

Because I've seen someone get, like 800+ followers that don't even look at his projects; they've, just, all followed him for absolutely no reason

Perhaps he was associated with a lot of follower accounts.

Maybe F4F? Or indirect F4F - following a lot of people and they follow him back, when no one's actually asking to do so? I don't know…

Who is it? I know people with 1000+ but it's only because they've been on Scratch for years (ie, NickyNouse)

dats a lot.

Likely the ST'd notice something was up if 800+ accounts were made from the same IP address, though.

My theory is that people that get large numbers of followers in a short period of time are usually people that have been on Scratch for a long time on other accounts. They tell their old followers where their new account is and suddenly there is a large number of followers on the new account.

I know that FPCs get quite a few followers, but I think that many people with tons of followers do F4F.

Let's remember that Scratch isn't about the numbers though.

I suppose it's just another of those internet phenomena with a few different explanations.

Often, when people are followed, they follow the other person back. This user might have just followed every single user that he/she saw anywhere and at least some of them followed back.

Yeah…I find it really annoying when there are Scratchers with more followers than me in shorter time and they didn't even get the followers legit. Just look at the number of following and study it over a few days - mine goes up by one every week or two, whereas some people can follow 300 people in a day or two. Clearly people just bribe others into following them. I need to make a project about this and start shoving it in abusers' faces.

ikr. I do follow people that don't follow me back, expect for one expection on April 1st. Also, shoving in abusers' facers sounds quite disrespectful, maybe you said it wrong?

I think the user you're referring to has also reached well over 950 now. It's disappointing to say the least that kids are turning their profiles into dedicated races for fame rather than sharing worthwhile projects that express their talents.

That is true. I use followers as an index of how good my projects are, and I don't F4F or anything to distort this. (For example: Since I've released Jetski Escape, my follower rates are higher).

What's important to know is followers is NOT an index of fame by itself, especially if the user F4Fs. It's highly likely that F4Fs result in users ignoring each others projects after their initial follows of each other. Real fame comes from people seeing and liking your projects. Remember that follows are meant as way to get information about a user's projects and activity, not as an “internetometer-like” index of fame.
