Probably when people started getting jealous of all the merch, games, and stuff of that nature that other people own. Also probably just general elitism (as in, “I own more Sonic games, so I must be a bigger Sonic fan than you”).

If anyone calls you a LARPer, feel free to laugh at them. Do not take them seriously (in the same way I took this post as just a harmless joke). You don't have to own all the games, know all the lore, or anything like that to be a fan of something. Personally, I started out as just a kid who played one Sonic game, proceeded to spend the next four years solely watching YouTube videos, and now I own nearly every Sonic game on my PC. We all start small, and we all start somewhere.
And maybe you've been a fan for years and years, and you still don't own everything or know everything. That's perfectly legitimate as well - we all love things in different ways. While I love something so much that I want to own every bit of it and want to know every bit I can, maybe you don't. Maybe you're comfortable simply owning the games you love, and nothing more. I may never feel that way towards a franchise I love, but you might, and that's perfectly fine.
All of this is to say we love things differently, but that doesn't make one person's love of something more legitimate than someone else's.

Yeah and to be a fan you don't have to necessarily own every single thing that is licensed to Sonic. I for instance like Sonic but also like other games and other topics like James Bond, Godot, and ig even Mario again. I sadly only own Sonic X Shadow Gens and thus satisfy myself by evaluating and watching gameplay. I also read the comics and the movies, but most of my time I don't even focus on Sonic. You don't have to necessarily be tied to the one franchise to be a fan. And if you are a fan of something else, don't be ashamed.

Never heard this before on the internet, and I must say… It's pretty stupid. Why would you not be considered a fan of one franchise if you're also a fan of a different franchise? Am I not allowed to have different interests? Personally, there are many other franchises I like: Mega Man, Star Wars, Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry, Marvel, Persona, and more that I won't list here. Still, Sonic is the one I love the most, know the most about, and have interacted with the most. I still love all of these franchises, and they're all awesome (to varying degrees).

If I were younger and the “larp” slang was around, I would've been called a “larper” to death because I didn't really care about the character personalities, resulting in OOC Shadaze work, and got facts wrong like confusing Gemerl with Emerl. That didn't mean why love for Sonic wasn't genuine.

I don't like this…
honestly I get the Gemerl thing since they're still the same character but one is more powerful but everyone knows shipping SHADOW with Blaze of all people is a recipe for disaster even if you're not too big of a Sonic fan
While I really do not want to go into shipping war level, Shadaze has plenty of fans due to their similar personalities.
no? Shadow is a brooding jerk who constantly sulks about anything Maria-related and will NEVER get into an actual relationship no matter how much the fans want it and Blaze is a princess who's just constantly stressed out about fulfilling her duties. that is not similar in the slightest.

06 shows that Shadow has a real relationship with Team Dark, and you can kinda see it in SXSG: Dark Beginnings. This newer perception and characterization of Shadow is thanks to the fact that nobody except Sonic actually did anything and had a real character during the Meta Era (2010-2021).
We're definitely getting better at giving characters real personalities and giving them something to do (look at Frontiers, SXSG, and CrossWorlds), but we still have a long way to go.

I mean yeah but the majority of Shadow's character is just him coping with his past and going through a Vegeta-level redemption arc every game he's in (SA2, Heroes and Black Knight being excellent examples)

You say that the majority of Shadow's character is him “coping with his past and going through a Vegeta-level redemption arc every game”, but I'd disagree with that.
  • In SA2, yeah, it makes sense and works just fine.
  • In Heroes, he remembers nothing - he has no past to cope with and no past to redeem.
  • In Shadow ‘05… I dunno. This game is spent on Shadow’s past, but it's also spent on Shadow learning about this past, so can you really count it? I do, but I just want to make it clear that it can go either way. But from what I remember, Shadow isn't spending time redeeming himself.
  • I haven't beaten Battle, but from what I've heard and seen, he doesn't bring up his past much, if it all. He's not redeeming himself for anything either.
  • Same for 06. Again, haven't beaten Shadow's campaign, but I've watched all the cutscenes, and neither his past nor Maria are mentioned once. He's not trying to redeem himself - he's just fighting for the right thing because that's who he is.
  • In Black Knight, we never see Shadow once. Lancelot just looks like Shadow because they reimagined characters from Arthurian legend as Sonic characters. He looks like Shadow and has Chaos abilities (like Chaos Blast, Chaos Control, and Chaos Spear), but he is not Shadow.
  • In Generations, Shadow's journey didn't even begin with him coping with his past or trying to redeem himself. He was searching for Black Doom to take him out because he knew that he was a threat, and if he's back, he needs to be taken care of. Then, he goes to White Space, and Black Doom and the Time Eater make him cope with his past by bringing back places and people. Sure, one might be tired of this (no clue how, given the fact that only SA2 and Shadow '05 deal with his past), but it makes perfect sense for Shadow Generations.
  • In Forces, he hardly does anything. He fights for the Resistance, defeats Infinite, and tells us what the Phantom Ruby is and what it does… and that's it. No mention of his past or redemption.
  • Same thing in the comics and CrossWorlds.

Gotta say, I really hate when people just say something “is good” or “is not good”. Like, there's more to it than that. What does it do wrong? Why isn't Heroes as good as other people say? And “not that good”? That's very vague - are you saying it's a 9/10 instead of a 10/10? I don't think you are, but you easily could be.

Please, some elaboration.

You're right. My post was vague. So here are my issues with the game.

My issues with the game come down to two leading factors. Issue #1: bugs (I did NOT play the Playstation 2 version) Issue #2: Having to replay the game four times.

Personally I think the game is a 7.5/10. It's not bad but it's also not too good.

P.S. This isn't even my biggest hot take related to Sonic.

Blaze consistently avoided contact with most other characters(not just because she's in a different universe) and in the comics, Blaze avoiding other characters is mentioned, as she is compared to Whisper in that instance. But, her character has changed, so has Shadow's.

that was only in one game though and even then, she quickly softened up when paired with cream. with shadow, he's just rude all the time.

To be clear, I haven't finished the game (I've played most of Team Hero's campaign), but during my time with the PC version… I honestly haven't encountered too many bugs, glitches, or anything like that. Probably because I've downloaded mods that patch this stuff out, so it may be an unfair comparison. But, if you have a lot of problems with bugs/glitches, you can just mod the PC version. It's not too hard to setup.

Agreed. It really sucks because, out of the four times you have to play the game, only the first two times are worth it. Team Hero is basically “normal mode”, Team Dark is basically “hard mode”, Team Rose is basically “easy mode”, and Team Chaotix is basically “mission mode”. From what I've heard and seen, Team Rose and Team Chaotix are much less fun than Team Hero and Team Dark cause the missions are unfun and why would you wanna play through a shorter, easier version of a stage you just played?

Idea I just had: A Pokémon-style game where you raise and train Wisps, or Chao, or Flickies. Personally, I think it'd be pretty cool.
