Because cloud variables with letters could lead to people making unmoderated chatrooms with the variables, Scratch does not allow this since it kind of has a huge thing about safety.

If cloud variables could store non-numbers, there would be a lot of opportunities for unmoderated conversations and a lot of innapropriate stuff could be said. Not good for a site with 8 year olds!

There are ways to work around this by making a cloud lists, but it's pretty difficult to code as it is not a native list capability.

I mean you could always encode the number into text if you need it.

Just so you know, Cloud chat projects are not allowed and may get taken down for unmoderated chat

They weren't trying to guess that you were 8.

Scratch is meant for people age 8 and up so age 8 kids is often used as a way to deem if smth is appropriate (example: Would you be fine with an 8 year old seeing this?).

Unfortunately, cloud chats are not allowed on scratch for the reasons I previously explained. I understand your frustration though! However, chats where you only choose from a specific list of phrases ARE allowed on scratch, if you want to make that.

They were just saying that because most Scratchers are 8+
